Windows 7: bsod irql_not_less_or_equal; no known changes

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

bsod irql_not_less_or_equal; no known changes

I recently encountered this BSOD message with no particular details. No recent changes to configuration or updates; used restore point and updated drivers to no avail. BSOD is erratic but usually follows a windows error message on screen sometimes when booting while RAID and Kaspersky are loading but not always. Have checked memory and disk drives. No known hardware issues. System is a three year old build and has been stable for at least the last 12 to 18 months.

System is Windows 7 Ultimate x64; build is 2-1/2 years old. OS is full retail version likely upgrade from Vista.

Thanks in advance for any assistance in determining the cause and possible solutions.

Hi -

20 of the 21 BSODs named Kaspersky Internet Security as the probable cause.

Remove KIS with the removal tool - http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146

Reboot upon completion. Install Microsoft Security Essentials.

For info, your KIS installation is >2 years old.

Regards. . .

Hi and thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I've had Kaspersky for several years on this computer without problem. The version I have now is actually the most recent "Pure" version and was loaded several months back as I do annually.

Not sure what would make it go haywire but I will unload it and see if things stabilize.

Did you get anything from the dmp files or are they difficult to read and ascertain a problem?

thanks again.

After you have followed John's advice above I suggest you update the following....

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver

- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference
- Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

Problem Solved - Thank You!

jcgriff2 -You are the man! - thank you for your assistance.

Uninstalled Kaspersky Pure and stable all day. Previously could only stay from BSOD for 3 hours. Reinstalled Kaspersky Pure and immediate windows error and subsequent BSOD. Uninstalled again and no problems.

Hope you don't mind me asking a followup question. You mentioned Microsoft Security Essentials. Is there another AV program similar to Kaspersky that you would recommend that doesn't cause too many problems or take up too many resources? Your input is much appreciated.

Thanks again.

I don't know what to say about this because the KIS drivers I found in your BSOD dump files show KIS 2009 (possibly an early 2010 release) -
Code:
kl1.sys Tue Sep 01 07:29:21 2009 (4A9D0591)
klbg.sys Wed Oct 14 13:18:13 2009 (4AD607D5)
klif.sys Thu Nov 26 04:07:11 2009 (4B0E453F)
klim6.sys Mon Sep 14 06:46:26 2009 (4AAE1F02)
klmouflt.sys Fri Oct 02 11:38:29 2009 (4AC61E75)
KIS drivers from another BSOD thread I worked on - 26 Oct 2011 -
Code:
kl1.sys Fri Mar 04 04:17:22 2011 (4D70AE22)
klif.sys Wed Apr 20 06:36:47 2011 (4DAEB73F)
kl2.sys Fri Mar 04 04:17:16 2011 (4D70AE1C)
klim6.sys Thu Mar 10 09:35:57 2011 (4D78E1CD)
klmouflt.sys Mon Nov 02 11:26:08 2009 (4AEF0820)
klmouflt.sys = KIS mouse filter driver and I've only seen 2009 timestamps for it. I don't expect to see 2011 on every KIS driver, but most should be. I'm not even sure if the 2nd code box contains the most updated version of KIS (2012).

It is likely that the old version KIS drivers adversely interacted with newer Windows 7 SP1 OS drivers or possibly 3rd party drivers such as Ethernet or wifi. There is no doubt in my mind that KIS caused 20 of your 21 BSODs (which you have now confirmed). Both kl1.sys and klim6.sys are named -

You are most welcome. Please feel free to ask any questions you want to. If I can't answer them, I know that others here can.

I recommended MSE because I use it on most of my own systems; it's free and does a great job. MSE is an anti-virus app and works in conjunction with Windows Firewall, Windows Defender. You also have the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool that is updated each month via Windows Updates.

My favorite other than MSE = ESET Smart Security 5 (ESS 5). I should tell you - I am an ESET Beta tester. One reason I like ESET is because it has the smallest system footprint (uses less resources) than others like KIS, NIS, N360, McAfee, etc...

If you are happy with KIS, I suggest that you contact them and obtain an updated installation of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 since you have a paid subscription. If you purchased it from a retail outlet, contact both Kaspersky and the retailer.
