System completely freezes after logging into Windows 7
Hi,
I bought a new Dell Vostro 3450 laptop with Ubuntu installed on it, removed Ubuntu, made new partitions and installed Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit on a primary partition. Then I installed all the drivers recommended on the dell's drivers' website. Just after doing that whenever I log into the windows it freezes after 15-45 seconds. When it freezes pointer does not move and I am also unable to open windows task manager. The only option is forced shutdown.
1. First I thought it's a wrong driver installation problem because there were a lot of drivers available on Dell's website for the WLAN and Bluetooth. So I completely uninstalled all the drivers for Bluetooth and WLAN, installed Everest Ultimate Edition and checked the exact hardware, installed the specific drivers. Even then the problem was not solved.
2. Then I thought it's due to the Catalyst Control Center (ATI's tool to manage switchable graphics card). My laptop has integrated Intel HD graphics and ATI Radeon HD 6630M graphics card. So I removed Catalyst Control Center from startup services by going to msconfig -> Startup. (I was able to do this by running the Windows in Safe Mode) Even then there was no improvement.
3. Then I thought it is due to Microsoft Security Essentials so I removed it in startup and it did not even work as well.
4. So I removed a lot of services one by one and saw whether the system freezes or not but all of the combinations failed.
5. Finally the Windows stopped freezing when I have removed everything (except synaptics driver) from startup even the services run by Intel i.e. hkcmd, igfxpers, igfxtray.
6. I also tried to run task manager just after logging into windows to see which specific process is consuming memory or processor but just before the freezing the processor consumption is generally 5-10% and memory consumption is 30%.
I am attaching the screenshot of my startup file so that you can check which applications are there by default. I am also attaching the services mentioned in msconfig.
My system specs are:
1. Intel Core i5 2nd generation 2430M
2. 2x2 Gb RAM
3. Intel HD 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics card
Disabling all the startup applications is a temporary solution so I would request any gentleman to suggest me a systematic way to troubleshoot my problem. I would also like to mention that I have now (after trying all the troubleshooting efforts) installed Ubuntu 11.10 and except for the unavailability of AMD graphics drivers (due to switching to Gnome 3 and Kernel 3), Ubuntu is running flawlessly so I guess this freezing problem is not a hardware issue.
