Still no luck with this. I tried some Driver Verifier testing tonight. Firstly, I tried all the drivers by AMD. It rebooted fine but it still black screened when I ran Furmark. Then I tried gearaspiwmd.sys, genericmount.sys and sptd.sys. This time on reboot, it crashed during the Windows splash screen. BUT, then testing each one individually, it booted up fine. I've updated gearaspiwmd.sys to the latest version (my dvd drive needs it to be recognised) but the black screen crash occurs anyway.

I did have another crash dump today which pointed to atikmpag.sys again. I just don't understand how I went from a stable system to this.
Just for testing, refer to post #7 about sptd.sys; if it does not resolve your problem, you can always re-install Alcohol 120% afterward.

Also, have you run through the steps in Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup to determine if it is an application conflict? (Do this after disabling Driver Verifier, which you can do by typing verifier /reset into an elevated command prompt)

Update: I've just tried unistalling sptd.sys. I did check that all drive emulation functions were disabled (not that I have them resident anyway) and they were.

No change.

Another update: for my own satisfaction, I ran Memtest for another 4 hours today. 3 completed passes with no errors. I also ran Video Memory Stress Test v1.7 under Windows as well as off boot disk. Both completed with no errors.

At the moment, I am completely convinced that this is driver related.

You could contact AMD and see what they have to say. Possible it's a known issue with your card and something with your system (not that your system is bad, just that there may be a known incompatibility with the card's newer drivers). You may also find AMD Game Forums - [SOLVED!] ATI 5970 Driver Install Results In Blank Screen After Reboot (Win7 x64) helpful. Make sure to follow the instructions to create a restore point before making any changes to the registry.

Any luck determining what caused the crashes? We look forward to hearing back if you found a solution.

Not really.

I definitely believe that the driver verifier crashes on boot are completely separate from the black screen issues. At this point my belief is that the black screen issues are due to the driver.

I have been fairly stable since I put on the v12.1 preview driver, and now 12.1 proper, because it gave me the ability to disable crossfire - that seems to have helped. I had to use Radeon Pro to do that previously - I'v enow taken that off. As well as that, I've added the Tdrlevel=0 dword registry key in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers just to take out any driver timeout issues.

That's where I'm at right now. I don't think the issue has gone. I'd love to hear of any definitive solution or for ATI to release a driver and declare that "Yes, this will resolve black screen issues".

So your cards work fine as long as crossfire is disabled? I would contact AMD and also contact your motherboard manufacturer and see what troubleshooting steps they give you.

BTW, even with the reasonably stability of the current settings, Furmark3D still crashes with the same loss of video signal.

It sounds like you either have a motherboard or graphics card problem. Definitely recommend contacting the manufacturer of each of those two pieces of hardware.

Did you contact the manufacturers?

No. I believe it's a driver issue. If I take a ghost image of my current boot drive, then wipe it out and restore the factory image that was on the machine when I got my box just over 18 months ago it's fine. As soon as I put recent or the lastest drivers on (even on that factory image), the same sort of stuff starts happening.

It has been completely stable with Crossfire disabled and the timing edit in the registry but, obviously, I'm not using the full capabilities of the card.
