Win 7 Lockup on normal boot. psu and gfx card are new.

Im new to tech forums as I usually can puzzle stuff out on my own. So here is my story.
    comp specs.
    amd phenom II x4 920
    6 gb ddr3 kingston
    samsung 1 tb disk drive
    sapphire 6870 hd radeon
    ocz modxstream pro 700w psu
motherboard is dell stock. i dont know what it is
    creative sb xfi xtremegamer

This computer is just over a year old. warranty is void as I open my case to clean it. >.> silly dell.
anyway. Problem started about a month ago, computer boots up and completely locks up on desktop after about 3-5 minutes. Did memory tests, disk checks etc. determined that it was the graphics card causing the crash. the graphics card failed because dell put a psu in the rig that couldnt power the 5870 properly so the crappy psu took my graphics card with it.
So I put in brand new graphics and a psu. problem solved. Ran beautifully for weeks. until last night. it locked up once, I hardbooted then it ran fine. this morning it locks up every time.
Last time once I took the graphics card out the onboard drivers kicked in and it ran fine hence I knew it was the graphics card causing the main fault. This time even with just the basics in the rig it locks up. Not in safe mode however. Currently running disk checks and memory tests again.
Im not sure I could get to the dump files you folks need before it locks up but I can try I just need a target folder to look for.
would I be correct in assuming:
    mobo
    processor
    ram
    lemon psu?
(hardrive checks out all checks ran fine)

I apologize for any lacking information. Ill get anything you need to you as fast as I can. :)

You can get the dmp files in safe mode with networking and upload them on here that way. Have you looked in event viewer for any culprits? If not, here is how:

In Safe Mode with an administrator account:
    1. Click start menu
    2. Type eventvwr.msc into the search programs and files box
    3. Hit enter
    4. Scroll down and look for any errors with app hangs or errors with svc in the name of the application.

Post back what the hangs or svc files are and we will assist you in fixing the problems.

Hi and thank you for replying.

I have looked thoroughly through event viewer already with the only thing showing up is kernel power 41 which is just the hardboot I have to do to restart I think. There are no errors for programs. This leads me to believe this is a hardware issue not a software one. Currently still running check disk on my hard drive to rule it out. After that I am going to run ram tests; cycling chips, memtest86. If I cant find faulty ram then Im going to assume a lemon psu or my motherboard. Im coming to the conclusion that when my old psu went and took my 5870 with it that it damaged some other smaller components in the computer that are now showing symptoms. It is quite possible that the memory on my graphics card was damaged and now the same issue is being caused not by dedicated memory but by the computer ram itself. Any further advice would be appreciated. The dump files are currently inaccessible due to my computer's check disk state.

I will try to get them to you before I start the ram tests.

memtest86 is a good way to test RAM; let it run for at least five passes. You may also look into running the extended portion of Windows based memory diagnostic for five passes. If it does not print any messages for the diagnostic upon startup, you can get the logs via Memory Diagnostics Tool - Read Event Viewer Log

Sometimes it takes both memory testing tools to find memory problems that one of the tools misses.

Ok. The memtest86 was at 4 and a half passes with no errors and I hit esc to reboot so I could access the dump files. It rebooted and went into startup repair im assuming because I aborted the memory test. It restored to before the windows update I did yesterday before this all started. It booted and I went to the folder you described and it was empty. I checked for previous versions, they were all empty. Then it locked up again.
Just rebooted into safe mode with networking. The minidump file is empty. not a single file there.

    EDIT
ok i found a single .dmp file but it says access is denied I cant do anything with it. and its in the previous versions. it doesnt show up in safe mode only in normal boot. there is no open as admin command like .exe files.

Get a windows 7 repair disk or windows 7 installation disk and go through the recovery options (install disc->install->select language->use recovery tools); the repair disc should automatically take you to the options. Run the command prompt.

    1. Type C:
    2. Type dir
    3. If a Windows directory is not shown, Type D:, otherwise go to step 6.
    4. Type dir
    5. If a windows directory is not shown, Type E:, otherwise go to step 6.
    6. Continue to try letters until you find the Windows directory; then type chkdsk /r for all drives containing Windows or Program Files directories. See Disk Check Option Two for how to run chkdsk from a command prompt (Note: you will not have to run the next time Windows starts as you are in the repair environment, so it can run from that environment). Use the chkdsk /r option to recover bad sectors.

Dell didnt give me a windows disk. Just a recovery partition that resets the computer to factory defaults. The computer is currently running more tests and the hard drive ones are hitting self read errors. :/

Should I use the recovery partition to wipe the drive and reinstall windows?
Thats all I have for repair and recovery thanks to dell.

    edit
I have two options that I can see.
    1) there is something called utility partition on my boot list
    2) dell has instructions for factory reset which include hitting F8 several times at startup then selecting factory reset.
