Laptop randomly freezes and screen turns black after

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this but, ever since I reformatted my laptop, it randomly freezes for about a second and a stuttering noise comes up. Then the screen turns black. It doesn't shut off because I could see the back light, it just turns completely black. What's causing this problem and how do I fix it? I checked the Event Logger and there are tons of errors and some critical kernal-power things.

Can you start in Safe Mode? If you can, do the following steps in safe mode.
  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Right click My Computer/Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
  5. Expand Display adapters
  6. Right click each display adapter in that list and click Uninstall (do not hit OK when the dialog pops up after clicking Uninstall)
  7. Put a tick to delete driver software for the device and click OK
  8. Restart Windows in normal mode

If you continue to have the same problem or other problems, let us know.

Oh, and the kernel-power errors just mean that your computer was not properly shut down. It's not good that they are reoccurring as often as they are, but we need to find the underlying reason for this. A black screen typically means a display card driver, so do the steps in my previous post.

I did what you said to do, we'll just have to see what happens.

Re-install all codec packs you are currently using, especially the DivX pack.

Go back through the steps with the video card driver. If you continue to have problems, run through the steps to Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup as it may be related to your DivX problem.

I don't know if this is related, but I also note event ID 7001, and the solution posed by Microsoft is posed in Event ID 7001 Is Logged in the System Event Log
