The chkdsk is still running through D:, but it looks like it is doing something this time.

What does the /r command do and why did none of this work when I ran chkdsk on D: earlier?

Thanks a lot!
/r recovers bad sectors on the hard disk. Hard disks have spare sectors built into them in case a sector is damaged, so what /r does is it reallocates the space to use a spare sector if it finds a bad sector and then tries to recover any data that might have been on the bad sector and write it to the spare sector. /r also run /f which fixes any file system errors (not to be confused with system file errors which are Windows file errors). File system errors are basically just corrupted data; the file system is the data and how the data is organized, and the errors correspond to that data being corrupted or its organization being corrupted.

Ah right, thanks for cleaing that up for me.

The scan has been stuck at 10% for a while now, I think that either it will stay there or need a lot of time to run, so I am going to have to leave it to run all night. I will check back with it tomorrow morning and post again.

Thanks again for your help!

You're welcome. And yes, the scan can take a while. I think my 500 GB drive took about 3-4 hours to run chkdsk /r when I ran it.

Update:

So I have run 3 checks now and midway through the 4th.

It gets stuck in stage 4 of 5 for about 1 1/2 hrs.

Should I keep going? Would a Windows Repair Disk help?

It may be the hard disk is failing. You should run any diagnostics provided by the manufacturer of the drive.
The following sites may be good references:
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World
HD Diagnostic

What were the results of the hard disk diagnostics?
