If that does not work, have you tried the commands in Safe Mode since less software is loaded there?

OK I was able to run lines 2 and 4, in fact I did it from the Repair Disc's command prompt to ensure there wouldn't be any conflicts. But still no improvement. Was that supposed to fix it?

OK I ran both of these now in safe mode and for some reason this has no effect on fixing my registry or software or whatever went wrong. I have told you everything, I Swear I'm not keeping any secrets from you. I don't know why this isn't solving the problems (like sound not working) except that maybe I just don't have permission to edit the permission on these keys.

Should I be adding all users I wonder to the keys I wonder? So far I've only added administrators and system.

It still doesn't add up why I can't import my backup of the registry or do a system restore. Should I just start uninstalling programs and see if that fixes it?

subinacl still said failed when trying to update about 1/4 of the registry key permissions that I saw.

This is impossible for recovery environment!! You did change the regkeys of recovery environment's mini windows itself. Doesn't matter it's in ramdisk so lost after reboot

So these 2 lines fail?
Code:
SetACL.exe -on "hkcr" -ot reg –rec yes -actn ace -ace "n:administrators;p:full"
SetACL.exe -on "hkcr" -ot reg –rec yes -actn ace -ace "n:system;p:full"

What happens if you create another user? Are you able to then get sound?

I used those two lines of setacl and they did not fail or report errors but like I said the hkcr lines I ran from command line. I had no idea that they wouldn't have any effect from there. I assumed that was the best place to do it so that the registry would not be in use. I'll try all four lines again in safe mode.

I used subinacl and got message that 1/4 of key permission updates failed in safe mode in the directions you gave me here: Tech XE How to Reset Windows Registry Permissions

I'm now also getting a message that my recycle bin on drive C: is corrupt.
