    BSOD 0x9F On HP Pavillion DV7 3111ea

Hello all, this is my first post here so please be patient with me!

This relates to a HP Pavillion DV7 3111ea running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. The original OS was factory installed and the system is about 1-2 years old.

I have re-installed the OS from a DVD but the same problem remains.

I am constantly getting a 9F stop on the machine every time I shut the system down. It goes through the normal log off and shut down screens, the monitor turns off and the hard drive seems to turn off. My problem is the power LED's, wifi LED etc all remain lit along with the system fan running. After a while I get the BSOD.

I have only been able to get the machine to save one crash dump, for some reason it wont save any more but the crash happens every time on shut down without fail. The most recent BSOD screens don't say anything about saving dump file to disk or anything like that.

I have attached all the info as per BSOD posting instructions. I couldnt get a performance report as the program seems to hang on this.

I hope I have included enough info to get the ball rolling!

    Thanks, Colin.

Nothing stands out but we do prefer more than one dmp to spot trends.

A driver is taking too long to respond and the best way to find out id to run driver verifier ans while you are at it test your ram by running memtest.

Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

    * If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
    In other words STOP!!!

    * If you have raid update its Driver.

    Memtest.
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

    RAM - Test with Memtest86+

    Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

    Then, here's the procedure:
    - Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
    - Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
    - Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
    - Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Special Pool", "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
    - Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
    - Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Thanks for the reply, but as I said before I cant get the machine to save any further dmp files. It saved only one and hasnt saved any more since but continues to crash on shut down.

There is no overclocking and the HDD is connected via SATA. I enabled driver verifier a couple of days ago but it didnt find anything (yet). I also ran memtest for 2 passes for all RAM with no errors. I have removed one RAM module and have begun testing the other on it's own. This will be run all day while I am at work (11hrs approx).

One on occasion, before I enabled verifier, I saw a different BSOD which indicated that verifier found a fault. This BSOD did not create a dmp file either but I did take a photo of the BSOD

You will see on the photo that the BSOD shows it is about to save the dmp file, but never actually did it. All further BSOD's dont even show the text for saving anything at all.

Memtest has ran all day and made 16 passes without any errors, I can assume this RAM module and mobo slot is fine. I tried running the machine with this RAM on its own and the same fault persists.

Also, the dumps are still not saving!

Still need the dmps. May be looking at a reinstall (clean)

I tried increasing the page file size to get dumps to save but still nothing. Have I got the settings correct?

    Write dump file - enabled
    Auto restart - disabled
    Small memory dump 256k
Save directory is set by windows
PF size is now 12000MB for this drive.

Yes, I did a clean install yesterday evening. I deleted all partitions, formatted drive etc.

The machine even hangs during the install of windows when it's trying to restart. Just freezes, mouse pointer gets stuck and will sit like that indefinitely. I have to hold the power button to shut it off.

Another thing I noticed is that it boots up just fine when the fresh install of windows is booting the machine using the chipset drivers on the windows DVD but when I install the correct drivers from intel (directly from intel site) the machine hangs on startup! There doesn't appear to be any HDD activity at all.

Could this be the problem with shut down as well? Is the hard drive being turned on/off at the wrong time by the system?
