    shutting down with stop:0x00000124

hi and thank you for letting me register.

i had windows xp for several years and recently (january) had a hard drive failure as it was making a terrible noise and kept shutting down, i then changed the HD for another i had - reformatted it and put windows 7 on it, i also bought new ram off ebay an changed the ram as when checked the old ram with mentest it failed on both modules (testing 1 at a time)

since i have had windows 7 it has been working and then freezing after approx 10 minutes and sometimes crashed on start up with the bsod.
i have been pulling my hair out trying to find out what is wrong, i thought it might be the cheap ram i bought so i changed this with some my brother had so i know if it crashes it wasnt the ram.

it now doesnt even start up with either ram the symptoms are.
1 - normal start up but comes up with repair (recommended) freezes after loading files.
2 - freezes before the above screen
3 - gets to the windows 7 four colour screen and shuts down with - stop:0x00000124

i have run a program before this all started not to boot up called blue screen view the results are as follows.

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .
A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress
    Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

You can read more on this error and what to try here...

Many thanks for your quick reply.

How do i know what is causing this? ie which hardware, would the motherboard or the cpu be the problem?

Also i dont know how to overclock, and if my pc cannot boot up how can i update the drivers.

    many thanks for your response

Can you boot into safe mode (F8)?

DO you have the win 7 dvd to boot from?

    Hi

yes i have the cd/dvd windows 7 disc, and no i cannot boot into safe mode as it either does a bsod or freezes.

i have been looking on the net and i can see you need a min of 2gb of ram to run windows 7 64 bit (which mine is a 64 bit) and have only 2gb of ram in it

what i am thinking of is reformatting (low level) and put back on windows xp as i still have the xp disc and saved the service packs for this some time ago.

if this works i then know that it isnt anything wrong with the pc but need to upgrade the ram to 4gb.
would you think this is a good idea, i know its long winded but this has take 2 weeks so far and still have no idea what is causing this, and am still getting the stop code error:0x00000124

    thank you
