Make sure the hard disk is properly inserted in the laptop and has not come loose. You will need a screwdriver to remove the hard disk panel to check. That would be the first thing to check. Post back after you have done so and we will provide further steps if needed.

In that case, run an HD Diagnostic using the diagnostic provided by the manufacturer. Both the steps for determining the manufacturer and the diagnostic links for the manufacturer are provided in that link.

You can also use a free program to identify all of your hardware.

Speccy Free System information Utility

Then you can use the link provided by writhziden to get the right hard drive testing app.

I saw that you posted that the Toshiba diagnostic tool did not work for your hard disk. It appears you deleted that post, but I still would like to make one suggestion. You can try SeaTools to at least scan the drive for errors. It will tell you if you have a good drive or not even if it cannot repair the problems. Run the short and long tests with SeaTools.
