I'll go ahead and run that now. Is the one with Ubuntu fine?

EDIT: I'm running it, and there's red in the console. i assume that's bad.

Yes, that is bad. That means you have at least one bad module or slot.

so, best-case scenario is I move the ram and it works. second-best is only one stick is bad. most probable is that I'm completely screwed. should I start testing one module at a time now?

okay, I have isolated that RAM stick that is causing the problems (it has errors in all slots). Unfortunately, this brings me down to 4GB of RAM, which isn't much more than my 3GB from before. I am contacting Amazon to complain (the ram had just been put in an antistatic bag and tossed in a box where it was pretty much crushed under my new case) with the hope that they will send me a replacement.

The RAM should be under warranty. You can return it through the manufacturer, as well.

I bought it used. Probably not the brightest move, but it was what I could afford.

Ah, that's too bad. Amazon typically has a good return policy, though. Hopefully they will help you out.

New build BSOD, blackouts, crashes.

Unexpected blackouts while watching videos
This has happened on and off for a while now, usually when I'm watching videos, using Skype, etc. My laptop simply shuts down without warning and then on re-booting asks me to use startup repair, which usually fixes the problem. Doesn't always include a BSOD, but last night it did when I...
