"BSOD" Error, but screen just goes black.

Hi, I've been experiencing some rather annoying crashes recently on my Dell laptop, the error window upon reloading says it was a blue screen error, though when it crashes the screen just goes black as if receiving no power, before the laptop shuts itself down a short while later. I'm not positive it's not a hardware fault, but I've gone through the usual means of checking for problems, though not yet reinstalled windows, and so far it is somewhat beyond me. Being out of warranty I'd like to know if this is a hardware fault or software/windows.

McAfee is a frequent cause of BSOD's.
I would remove and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST!

Related to atikmdag.sys ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver. Yours from 2010. Update to newest using these instructions.

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver.

In order to do that we recommend using
    http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.
