freeze ups, new mobo time?

Problem:
intermittent freezeups. Pointer freezes, input freezes, machine does not respond to ctrl-alt-del. Only reset. auto reboots if left

Description:
Happens in all software games/productivity, happens at any time, even if idling. happens a bit more if there is proc load: crashes more in heavy duty games and if streaming/multitasking. happens 1*wk to several*day.

What I got:
athlon 64 fx57 (off ebay, yeah I know)
mobo ASrock 939 dual sata2 (from '06-7 borrowed from mate)
ram: 2* 1gb elixir and 2* 1gb corsair from my prev machine
Sound: Xonar DG (brand new)
Graphics: evga gtx 550ti (brand new)
HDDRV: a new 320gb sata2 drive cannibalized from a new set-top box
power: 650w altrix
OS: win7 home OEM

What have you done to identify the cause?
Format and fresh install of Win7, prob remains
Avast virus scan, prob remains
Win defender scan, prob remains
MBAM scan, prob remains
kept win7 updates - er updating, prob remains
Used ccleaner to clean web browser files only: prob remains
used ccleaner to swirtch off start up software: prob remains
not touched registry, have read is ill advised in more recent version of windows
uninstallled software not using. prob remains
done another reformat and reinstall, prob remains
kept driver updated: prob remains
booted up with driver verifier: freezes lots more.

What have you done to rule out your dodgy hardware?
proc: "hotCPU4 lite" stress test: no errors
Mem: win7 startup memtest: no errors
Grphx: evga stress test software: no errors
HD: seagate's seatools test on short and long read and write: no errors
PSU, out to electronics store for testing: clean bill of health.
Mobo: can't test it, don't know how, can't find anything when googling.

The mobo is from my mate, he stopped using it because the proc died and socket 939 was outdated when he replaced the proc, so he got a new mobo. He has no reason to think it dodgy.

I don't know where else to look for fault, but I don'e want to shell out for new proc and mobo to find it is something I've missed, esp software! Esp if crashing more with driververifier....

Sorry about the dual thread, Would appreciate someone merging them, the machine crashed I couldn't tell if the forum had registered the post, was using a second machine at the time.

I don't like my diagnosis of exclusion: everything is ok, must be the mobo. Because it is an expensive fix and is unproven.

Read that a single pass of a memtest program may not detect memory issues. So ran memtest86 for 6 hours. No faults.

ok 2 hours in safe mode, no crash. Could go for 2 hours out of safe mode though.

OK, here's some more.

In SAFE mode with driver verifier running, JC griff is waayy faster. Also proc load is not 100 but about 30%. JC griff completed (for a change) and so the complete file is here.

Tried HW monitor. In normal mode I have CPU temp in the 50Cs. This would have a 100% proc load (driver verifier). In safe mode is reports very little. Saved out a monitor report, but I don't think it will say much, it was done from safe mode.

I can do a HWmonitor report from normal mode for a full range of temps. I don't know what normal temps should be (help? - got any good links?). I know the fans are clean (cleaned few weeks back) and there is a new case fan (120mm) blowing out slightly warmed air. I re-seated the heatsink with some new thermal paste, so not expecting any astonishing temps.

Tried the trial of AIDA64. Lots of info there, not too sure what to do with it all. Ran a report and have included it here.

Safe mode seems stable, but I haven't run it for very long in safe mode. More to the point, as you can see I am trying to see if this is really a drivers issue. If I tell driververifier to test the non microsoft corp drivers, in safe mode, they won't be loaded anyway..? not testing anything...?

What temperatures are you seeing for your motherboard? Your hwinfo temps look good.

For a memory check: Download and install CPU-Z and Upload screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs. In the SPD tab, upload an image of each slot.

Here are the CPUZ pages. You will notice I only included SPD slots 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are empty: I'm still trouble shooting see explanation

The mobo can only see 2.(something) Gb of ram. with my 4*1gb stick, memtest 86 can't test it all. I took out the corsair sticks and put the elixir sticks in slots 1 and 2. Memtest86 was defo testing all available ram, both elixir sticks at least. Then I ran mem test for 21hrs17mins. No errors on the elixir sticks.

Now with 2 ok sticks, (mem errors ruled out) I still had a crash. It felt "freeze up" like. first firefox stopped responding, then all software stopped responding, moments later. This is the same pattern as most (alll?) of the desktop crashes. Gaming crashes are complete freezes.

Running CPUZ just now had driververifier running in the back ground, so proc load was high. temps should be up the machine has been running for 24~hrs.

RE ram, should I swap to the corsair sticks and memtest them? Is that a waste of effort? if the eror was the corsair stick the freezing would have resolved. The eleixir sticks are ok, must be something else.

When setting up this mobo, I couldn't get onboard sound to work. spent 2 weeks chasing the issue. There was jumeprs to set and bios settings to choose, and drivers to update. Did everything. I had no luck where others succeeded. in the end I switched it off and got the soundcard listed above. This it seems was a common cure on other forums. The previous owner also said he couldn't fix sound. There was an article I read that said there was a batch of these boards with duff sound chips. Some were recalled. Second hand I don't have that option. In any case this paints a picture of a duff Mobo overall.

Let me know what you think of the CPUZ images.

I also copied in setting for driver verifier. I appreciate it doesn;t give you test results as such. it has effectively listed settings for tested drivers. prbably doesn;t mean anything.

As a cheaper solution (am a student), I think I might try getting a 939 mobo off ebay to see if I get any joy there. If it works it would validate to my "bad mobo" hypothesis.
