HP Elitebook 8540p randomly crashing/BSOD

Is Windows 7 . . .
- x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? 64bit
- the original installed OS on the system? No
- an OEM or full retail version? Full

- What is the age of system (hardware)? 1 1/2 years roughly
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) 1month, Yes!

Trying to determine if I need the motherboard replaced or if its software related.

Run an sfc/scannow command in an elevated command prompt. If errors are found, run it twice more with each scan followed by a reboot.

These drivers can be found by searching them in Google and then finding the associated software or driver. Finally, find the latest version of this driver or software and download and install it. Some of the drivers may also be found here (if the driver says 'Windows Update' simply make sure all Windows Updates are installed).

You should also update any other drivers you can think of including graphics, audio, chipset etc.

Make sure all Windows updates are installed.

Did you run the scan thrice?

At least to test, uninstall Trend Micro and install MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) instead.

Make sure you've followed my other instructions also (virus scan, driver updates etc).

getting a new motherboard and graphics card from HP as laptop is under warrenty, see if that helps.

my friend thinks if i've left the laptop on in my bag and its gotten really hot, chances are a capacitor isnt functioning correctly on my MB

That could be it. If it's under warranty, taking it to HP is probably the best option.

Even if you do get a motherboard if these errors arent fixed and you use the same OS you will have the same problem.

I've done pretty much everything on the list (just need to install MS AV) and had the motherboard and graphics card swapped out.

My worry is that SFC /Scannow is not fixing the errors. doesnt matter how many times i run it keeps coming back saying corruptions

You have two options:

You can move to OPTION THREE of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html and use the tip in that OPTION to replace the corrupted files manually.
You can do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html to let the Windows installer replace the bad files automatically, in which case

latest official Win7 installer ISO with SP1

will be useful. You need to select Home Premium 32/64-bit, Professional 32/64-bit, or Ultimate 32/64-bit depending on what you currently have installed on your system and have a license to. If you need help, please fill in your system specs using http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html so we can help you determine which version you have installed on your system.

Hi all,

I have the same problems with the Elitebook 8540p. When playing movies or sometimes Flash, my laptop is crashing (my laptop doesn't respond, hard reboot needed). The problem always occurs when im playing movies and sometimes I get BlueScreen.

My OS is Windows 7 Professional 64bit, OEM.

The age of the system is 2years and the age of the OS installation is 4 months.

When I connect a projector (VGA connector, Samsung LCD display, 17"), I don't get theses crashes (I also don't get crashes in Ubuntu distribution).

I have this problem since 6months and any help would be really appreciated.

For information, my antivirus is BitDefender Internet Security 2012, and it is up to date.

In the meantime, with the limited information provided:

It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash. As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds. If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU. Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.
