Windows 7 unable to boot in normal or safe mode

    Hello guys,

I've been attempting to fix my laptop for the past 4 hours and nothing seems to be working so I thought I would try my luck in this forum. Here's what's going on:

When I turn it on, it loads the compaq screen, then says "windows is loading files".
It then attempts to take me to the startup repair screen, but cannot load the startup repair options and just stays at a blue screen (NOT the blue screen of death).

I am unable to start the computer in safe mode as it gets to the same screen and does the same thing.

I have accessed the boot options screen and loaded windows from the disk in an attempt the repair it that way but I can not restore the computer from an earlier point in time and startup repair does nothing but search for problems for hours with no progress.

Im running windows 7 home edition 32bit
The computer is a compaq presario CQ42

I'm running out of options and would love any help! Re-formatting is not an option I need the information!

    Thanks in advance :)

    system restore: what error?
Boot into recovery environment. Then goto "command prompt"

    chkdsk/f c:
    Code:

    chkdsk/f d:
    chkdsk/f e:
    chkdsk/f f:
Some of these commands fail because of the fact you don't have a drive called F for example

    Code:

    diskpart
    list vol
    exit
    give you the drive letters

Any disk errors? Are all errors repaired?

No progress??? how do you know? Is harddisk flashing all the time? I think startup repair is performing a checkdisk and that takes sometimes hours to complete

Sorry I forgot to mention I ran a startup repair and it said that the problem had been solved. So I restarted my computer but it just did the same thing as always. So I ran it again and left if over night last night and it was the same in the morning?

So I assumed that there was no progress...

What problem did it solve? (next time post that info as well)
You have to run startup repair multipile times until all errors have been fixed.

try chkdsk/f as I told you

It has been known for a Startup Repair to run for three days.

You may also need to run it three times with a reboot between each occurrence.

Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

Did you run chkdsk /f as advised?

On balance, a clean install as Thomas suggests may be a quicker option for you.

Why?? Are you sure it's a software problem and not a faulty harddisk?

Before performing a clean reinstall he has to save important documents as well

Thanks for all your replys guys,

I ran startup repair again 2 hours ago and it is still attempting repairs. I cannot attempt the check disk option yet but will do when this "repairs" it self.

I was unaware that you had to run it a few times to fix some issues so I'm hoping that this is all is takes.

    I will post updates : )

    Thanks again guys

    You're very welcome.

I know it's frustrating, but be patient and chances are a startup repair will fix things for you.
