System Continuously Freezes (ASUS UL20FT)

I have had this ASUS UL20FT laptop for a little over a year and a half. Recently, it has started freezing within 15 minutes of booting. The display will freeze and the keyboard and mouse will be unresponsive. I am forced to hold the power button to shutdown. I am currently operating in Safe Mode without issue, which should help narrow the problem down. Through my research, I thought it might be an issue with the graphics driver, but I recently updated that to no avail. As soon as it started freezing, I began frantically updating drivers and still nothing. I ran SFC/ SCANNOW as an administrator and it found no issues. Memory Diagnostic also returned zero errors. I have attached the System Info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quite a few System problems, and a few network problems.

Most prevalent with literally thousands

Log Name: System
Source: Service Control Manager
Date: 4/11/2012 6:45:55 PM
Event ID: 7001
Description:
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

Network

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-SharedAccess_NAT
Date: 4/10/2012 4:25:00 PM
Event ID: 34001
The ICS_IPV6 failed to configure IPv6 stack.

Also Bonjour service (iTunes-Quicktime). These go back to 2010

Skype IE plugin errors. These go back to at least November 2011.

Now the question is what do you want to do about them? You may be able to fix these (and the others) one by one but a clean install might be easier.

BTW you might want to clean out event viewer by deleting the logs once you get your issues fixed.

Thanks, but those are not the causes for the system freezing. As you stated, those have been occurring for quite some time. The system freezing, however, started in January at the earliest. Thus, the freezing would have started last year if it were caused by those errors.
Also, these errors should not be able to make the system freeze.

Any other ideas?

What memory test did you use? and for how many passes?

Does it freeze when not connected to the network/internet?

Does it do the same thing in safe mode?

I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic. It passed with the 2x4GB RAM sticks I recently installed, and with the stock 2GB stick that came with the machine (I tried each in case the RAM was the problem).

I have never had it disconnected from the Internet so I am not sure. I could try using it while disconnected for a bit - though I will have to get my work done first.

It runs fine in Safe Mode.

Thanks.

Windows Memory diagnostic does not stress the memory enough to be a good indication of the RAM health. We recommend memtest.

Good news. 6-8 passes?

6. System still freezes a lot. Anything else I can try?

Driver Verifer

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition.
Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is.
But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver.
Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows.
If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise.
Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like.
From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

If you are using win 8 add these

- Concurrency Stress Test
- DDI compliance checking

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Thanks to JGriff2 & Usasma.

Same issue

Hi,

I had the exactly same issue. I have UL20FT (i3 330um, 8gb ddr3...) and sometimes randomly freezed (with the original 2x2gb ddr3 too). It's not depend on: temperature, program, time, cpu and memory usage. Freezed at: welcome screen, browsing, text editing. I tested the memory with windows memory scan and memtest64, and used aida64 stress test, but i didnt found anything (i tested with newly installd factory windows 7 64bit prof).

So i decided to install a clear Windows 7 64 bit without Asus programs (that lot of shit you can download from support.asus.com...), just the drivers + ATK. When I installd it i got a lot of BSoD (ndis.sys) when i tried to search for bluetooth devices, but when i'm finished install all of the newest driver bluetooth just worked fine.

The point is that, now (12h later) i dont have any freeze. Try to install a clear windows without factory "gifts"... the factory windows 7 has about 80-90 running processes, the clear install has 55-65.

I hope this is the solution.. for you, and for me too

Thanks, but I have far too many programs I have installed to be able to do this. I no longer have the serial numbers for most of the software I have installed.

Any other suggestions?

Query just says what drivers are being watched not if anything is wrong

I am aware. I let the verifier run for 36 hours as was directed. No blue screen. The issue is not the drivers.

So not RAM, not software, that leaves other hardware, or networking.
