DELL XPS 420 random lock ups using different applications

    Hey guys,

My Dell XPS 420 has a problem now and again whereby everything stops working, but I can still move the mouse. If I try to click somewhere it'll say not responding. It locked up again just now, and if you look at the log, the time where the PC locked up was around the time of the error 21/4/12 12:54:32PM.

I have no idea what is causing the issue as I'm not high level enough to interpret event logs. All I will say is that I have running on my PC: avast, adaware, malware antibytes and advanced system care pro for maintenance so I keep my PC in good health (or not it seems!)

All of the above have reported no issues, no viruses etc etc and I have run full scans testing all hard drives.

I have run the trial version of active smart (hard drive utility) and no errors are being reported for any of my drives. Check disk etc reports no issues.

In the past my Crucial Ballistix memory has failed a couple of times, but those were BSOD errors that I identified and fixed by replacing the memory.

Does anyone have any clue that could point me in the right direction? I have recently given the PC a good dust out using compressed air and it worked fine straight after so I'm sure its not that and the PC hasn't reacted to me giving it a clean before in any case.

I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 with 8 gig of ram.

Cheers guys, any more info you need just holla!

Is it worrying that the log reports 16000 errors since July of last year lol?!

    Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Sounds like you may have a hardware problem that could be related to RAM, motherboard or power supply.

Have you considered using Dell's diagnostic utility?

    Dell Diagnostics Utility

Restart computer and press F12 several times until the Boot Device menu appears
    Insert the Driver Resources CD
Select the Onboard or USB CD ROM option on the Boot Device menu
    Press Enter
Press Enter again when you are prompted to Press any key to boot from CD
Choose the 32-Bit Dell Diagnostics and press Enter
At the Hardware Diagnostics Initializing screen choose Test System
    Press Enter
On the Hardware Test screen select Custom Test and press Enter

You might also want to rethink your anti-virus strategy. Many of us just use Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Hi and thanks for the reply. I have a diagnostics option which I ran after pressing f12. Not sure if it was the Dell utility but that was all I had on that menu. No problems flagged up. I have daemon tools installed, which if you look in my log file, flags up an lptd error which is daemon tools related I believe. Short of reinstalling windows again...I'm at a loss.

    Cheers

Have a look at this Microsoft article on clean booting and the relevant Fix-it.

Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program
