BSOD usually when idle

Hello everybody,

I am new to the forums and have read the instructions for this area so please excuse my ignorance if I have messed something up, I will correct it aws soon as I am either told about it or notice it myself. Now on to the issue.

I have a Dell XPS with most stock hardware (added 1 HDD and removed 1 optical drive). I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with and i7 and 12gb of ram. The Windows install is not factory, but it is from a disc I got from dell when I called and complained long enough (and to several different people) that I did want all of the standard junk that is on the factory restore.

Most nights my computer apparently BSODs while I am asleep and yesterday was the first time I saw it happen. I am unfamiliar with reading the crash reports after the fact, but I was able to see on the 1 BSOD I saw that it mentioned my ATI Radeon HD5800 graphics card (atisys___ or something of the sort). I then removed the ATI drivers and software complete with Driver Cleaner and reinstalled the newest version. I do no do and have not done overclocking.

Any help with this issue (and how you came to that conclusion) would be appreciated.

The debugger doesn't like your graphic driver install for some reason, I can't get it to spit back anything but video tdr reports from the debugger here.

This is the same conclusion you came to. I am surprised that wiping the driver and reinstalling didn't solve the problem for you though.

Being a i7 system do you also have the intel 3000hd listed under display devices?

The ATI card is the only one that shows up. I am currently running the driver verifier to see if I can get any more info that way and memtests come up clean of course. Have used prime95 yet though...That is next.

well there is one thing you can try here.
Instead of using the driver sweeper method use the method outlined here (you likely will not have the permissions mentioned in this post but it wouldn't hurt to check either)
Fix - Catalyst Control Center - CCC - will not open/install

Doing it all manually that way actually seems better than driver sweeper.
You may also want to try going back 2 versions or so with the drivers it could just be a problem from this specific driver version, and since they kick them out nearly every month now you shouldn't have to go very far back to test that theory.

edit: final thought here
make sure your .net framework stuff is fully up to date too.
The catalyst center and the driver itself both use it.

Alright, I'll try that. I will revert back to 12.2 from 12.4. Just wished iit crashed when I was doing something specific so I could try that to force it. I will try to give it a few days and repost with the results (and the new crash dump if needed) I am half tempted to install Windows 7 on a seperate partition and just test the driver for a while. Do you know of any programs that might assist in stress testing the gpu or some other tests that will either verify the the suspected issues or rule it out?

Well since it's happening when idle, I would guess the trigger is window's power management.
Turning everything to always on might prevent the problem.
However ....everything will always be on, which isn't good for component lifespan.
