    PC crashing/BSOD when cold booting.


    Hey everyone,

    I was hoping someone could help me - since updating the AMD Vision Engine Control Center to version 12.4, my PC has been performing a BSOD every time I start it up. Even after removing the program, all the drivers and using Driver Cleaner Pro before reinstalling it, it's still doing it. I've attached my dump files and diagnostics report. This is the error message I got after my PC restarted:

    I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with SP1, it's the original OS, full retail version. My PC is about 2 years old and I performed a full reinstall about 3 months ago after buying a new hard drive.

    It is difficult to tell from one .dmp file what the cause is. If you are using any file cleaning programs, please refrain from doing so for the duration of getting help. CCleaner and Windows Disk Cleanup can delete .dmp files when run.


    The bugcheck code can indicate a hardware fault. It may also mean an underlying driver conflict is present on the system.

    Please remove any CD/DVD virtualization software, such as Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%, as they use a driver called sptd.sys that is known to cause BSODs. Use add/remove programs to remove the software. After removing the software, use the sptd.sys uninstaller to remove sptd.sys from the system.

    I prefer TotalMounter as my CD/DVD virtualization software as it allows me to burn images to a virtual CD/DVD if I just want an ISO file instead of a disc, and it is free.

    Many use MagicISO - Convert BIN to ISO, Create, Edit, Burn, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter/extractor/editor as well, which is also free.

    I removed Alcohol, then went through every single driver I have and updated it before finally doing a complete reinstall of my graphics drivers and software - so far no BSOD. If it does it again I'll post a new dump file but hopefully it'll be OK. Thank you for your reply!

    And today I had a BSOD after my PC updated a load of Windows files.

    Crashes related to your graphics card. Could be its drivers are corrupted.
    • Re-install or install the latest drivers for your display card. Your current drivers may be corrupt and/or outdated. Use the following method to re-install the drivers.

      1. Download the drivers you want for your display card(s)
      2. Click Start Menu
      3. Click Control Panel
      4. Click Uninstall a program
      5. For AMD:
        • Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager if it is listed (this should remove all AMD graphics software and drivers)
        • If AMD Catalyst Install Manager is not listed, use the following method to uninstall the graphics drivers:
          1. Click Start Menu
          2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
          3. Click Manage
          4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
          5. Expand Display adapters
          6. Do the following for each adapter (in case you have multiple display cards)
            • Right click the adapter
            • Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
            • Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK


            Alternatively:
            1. Login as an adminstrative user
            2. Click Start Menu
            3. Click Control Panel
            4. Click Hardware and Sound
            5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
            6. Expand Display adapters
            7. Do the following for each adapter (in case you have multiple display cards)
              • Right click the adapter
              • Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
              • Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
        • Restart your computer after uninstalling drivers for all display cards
        • Install the driver you selected for the display cards once Windows starts

    Had 2 BSODs in a row on cold booting today after doing what you suggested, then the machine wouldn't boot at all and I had to do a startup repair. I'm losing the will to live with this and am about to assume it's my RAM being full of fail...great when I have no money to buy a new set. Am I right?

    System scan didn't report any integrity violations, and the disk check found no problems either.
