BSOD at random times, other times just lock up

I have been getting BSOD's for the last week or so. I can't read the entire screen in time when it happens but I do catch something about a hardware issue. This has happened several times while playing video games, but others when surfing the web, or just doing some typing. I've checked all of the components and they seem to be functional to the best of my knowledge.

I was getting random lock ups as well, where the entire system would freeze up, I would lose control of everything. This happened a few times when watching movies or games, and the sound would continue on as if there was nothing wrong while everything else froze and would not respond. I reinstalled windows and none of these lock ups have happened since, and I went 2 days without the BSOD but it has come back today.

The computer is as follows with a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS

Intel 980 Extreme 6 core CPU
12 GB DDR3 Ram
2 64GB Kingston SSD
1 2 TB SATA Drive
Nividia 430 GPU

I've attached the mindump file and the system report file as per the instructions and would appreciate any help on this matter. While I am by no means a computer guru or expert, I've tested everything I could and found no viruses or lack of important drivers that could cause this. I also stress tested my GPU and CPU to make sure they were not overheating, though I didnt think they were. Under full load the GPU peaked at 81C with an average running temp of 40C and the GPU was 74C at peak and 37C at standard operation level.

Make sure the above are installed. You should be able to find the drivers from your motherboard support site or your system vendor's support site (through HP, Dell, etc.).


Update your Intel IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers device. To determine the device, you can find it in Device Manager. To fully re-install a driver, use the following steps.
  1. First, download the latest driver. Then do the next steps.
  2. Click Start Menu
  3. Right Click My Computer/Computer
  4. Click Manage
  5. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
  6. Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
  7. Right click the device
  8. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
  9. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
  10. Restart your computer only if Windows asks you to.
  11. Install the latest driver for the device.

Alternatively:
  1. Login as an adminstrative user.
  2. First, download the latest driver. Then do the next steps.
  3. Click Start Menu
  4. Click Control Panel
  5. Click Hardware and Sound
  6. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
  7. Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
  8. Right click the device
  9. Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
  10. Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
  11. Restart your computer only if Windows asks you to.
  12. Install the latest driver for the device.

Run some hardware checks:
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

    Monitor temperatures during the following tests.
    Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures.

    Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

    For Part 3: If You Have Errors: If you swap any memory components, follow these steps for ESD safety:
    1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
    2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
    3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
    4. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
    Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

Alright, sorry about it being so long for the reply but I've had a lot going on. The problem also seemed to clear up after a fresh install of windows and all drivers. Then it came back just as before, locking the computer up where only a hard shut down would fix it. There would also be random blue screens.

I've done everything listed above, the drivers are all there and up to date, no overclocking is taking place, there were no errors on RAM or GPU memory, CPU and GPU were both sucessfully stressed with no overheating (both were at least 15C under the maximum specifications of the manufacturer). All tests were performed to at least the mimimum number of passes with no incidents recorded.

I've also redone the System Health Report as well as included the crash message from when my computer Bluescreens and all of that and attached it.

Where do I go from here?

I would recommend uninstalling Gigabyte utilities and seeing if it helps. They can sometimes cause problems because they interface with the hardware to allow overclocking of hardware through the software.

Install all Windows updates.

Other than you still need to activate Windows, I do not see anything that stands out. What about the updates status and the Gigabyte utilities? Any changes?

I uninstalled them and have yet to see a lockup or BSOD since, but there have been many stretches where it hasn't happened and I think maybe it's better before it starts happening again. Curiously when I went to boot up this morning before loading windows i got a little message on the black screen before the windows loading icon that said. "File is possible corrupt. The file checksum does not equal the computed checksum." and I had to restart. It did not appear again. Don't know if that is relevant, but I had never seen that before.

And I had a lock up a few minutes ago. There was an entry in the Event Viewer.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000116 (0xfffffa800ed05010, 0xfffff88010f791a4, 0xffffffffc000009a, 0x0000000000000004). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 060512-14586-01.

That is a Video TDR Error crash.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I've tried everything I could so far and there has been no luck. I even switched out video cards, but the same exact problem persists, so as I orginally thought there is nothing physically wrong with the card. I do not know what exactly is causing the errors and I have been unable to resolve them, much to my frustration. The computer is exhibiting other strange symptoms now as well. At times, when powered up, it will start booting for like 10 seconds then completely shut off and not turn back on. No matter how long I wait pressing the button on the front will not make the system boot. I have to flick the off/on switch on back twice and then it will boot. It also has now stopped booting altogether for me to try anything else. It says "Error loading operating system..." right before it would normally begin to load windows. I am really started to get very frustrated.
