Are you able to get to the desktop?

If so, start Resource Monitor and click on various tabs (CPU, Memory, Disk) and see if you can determine what's hogging the machine.

To start Resource Monitor
Click Start, click in the Start Search box, type resmon.exe, and then press ENTER.

Or, follow the directions at the top of this page for uploading dump files and we can take a look at the logs.

Thank you for the reply. The performance monitor shows the CPU usage as minimum and yet the light still glows

If you boot into SafeMode, is the problem still there?

BOOT TO SAFE MODE
Power down your computer.
Power up your computer.
IMMEDIATELY—Start tapping the SPACEBAR
When the Windows Boot Manager screen appears,
Press the F8 key
The Advanced Boot Options screen will appear.
Using the down arrow key, highlight Safe Mode
Press the ENTER key.

In shorthand,
PowerUp | Spacebar until Windows Boot Manager
| F8 | Safe Mode | ENTER

Windows text too light
One big issue for me in Win7 after XP is that text in browser windows (like in IE9, Firefox and Thunderbird) lacks contrast - it's a pale grey rather than the black I had in the same apps in XP. Actually this text is pale grey as I type it. This seems to be "global" and no amount of fiddling in...

First we'll look at Windows 7's minimum requirements (as Windows 8 will most likely be the same or a bit lower on average): 655mhz CPU 512mb RAM onboard graphics with 8mb 10gb hard drive XBOX 360 specifications: 3-Core 3.2ghz cpu (PowerPC, a little like ARM) 500mhz GPU 512MB RAM
