AMD Radeon HD 7850 Crossfire BSOD

I just bought a new desktop 2 days ago. I installed all components by myself. Everything works fine except Crossfire (2 * AMD Radeon HD 7850)

The crossfire appears to be fine, but after I play 3D MMORPG for a while, BSOD errors occur.

Then I find out when I run a performance test: PassMark PerformanceTest - PC benchmark software, every time on 3D test stage, it fails to start step 3 (when it becomes fullscreen and you can see several jets flying around), and BSOD occurs. The attached file is the dump file when this happened.

Then I try running each of the VGA individually. They work perfectly on their own. It's just when it comes to crossfire, they fail.

I have tried re-install OS and drivers, not working. The drivers are the newest from internet, not only the VGA's, also the motherboard's.

The follows are some of my system & hardware spec:
    OS: Win 7 ultimate x64
    CPU: Core i7 3770
    RAM: Kingston DDR3 8G 2133
Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer 900W (which i think it should be enough)

I will appreciate any help. If you need more info, plz let me know.

Are you trying to install 12.4 software of Catalyst Control Center drivers? That software is buggy, you will need to install 12.3 first then 12.4.

I don't know how to read dump files, but I had issues with my graphics card and installing latest drivers (12.4 is latest as far as I know)

thx for reply. I tried uninstall 12.4 and install 12.3 instead. It passed the Performance Test I mentioned above, which I usually use to test if this problem still exist. I was excited and thought the problem solved. But after I play Aion for about 30min, the problem comes again. It's not BSOD, but the monitor was down and I could do nothing. (like the first time I discover this issue)

How'd it go down? Feel free to update to 12.4 after making sure 12.3 was installed in the revision information panel.

What type of issue and monitor you using?

Your crash is a 0x116 TDR Error crash. See below for more information about this particular crash.

    For general troubleshooting:

    • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

    • Check Windows for corruption. Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker up to three times to fix all errors with a restart in between each. Post back if it continues to show errors after a fourth run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations. Use OPTION THREE of SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to provide us with the sfcdetails.txt file if errors occur.

    • Follow the steps for Diagnosing basic problems with DirectX. To re-install your display card drivers as outlined in the DirectX link, use the following steps.

      1. Download the drivers you want for your display card(s)
      2. Click Start Menu
      3. Click Control Panel
      4. Click Uninstall a program
      5. For NVIDIA:
        • Uninstall the NVIDIA Graphics Driver (this should uninstall all NVIDIA software and drivers)
        • Restart your computer
        • Make sure NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver, NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player, NVIDIA HD Audio Driver, and NVIDIA PhysX System Software are not still listed under Uninstall a program through Control Panel
        • If any remain of the above, uninstall one at a time
        • If asked to restart after uninstalling any of the above, do so, and continue uninstalling any remaining NVIDIA items until all are removed
      6. For AMD:
        • Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager if it is listed (this should remove all AMD graphics software and drivers)
        • If AMD Catalyst Install Manager is not listed, use the following method to uninstall the graphics drivers (this applies to onboard graphics, as well):
          1. Click Start Menu
          2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
          3. Click Manage
          4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
          5. Expand Display adapters
          6. Do the following for each adapter (in case you have multiple display cards)
            • Right click the adapter
            • Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
            • Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK

            Alternatively:
            1. Login as an adminstrative user
            2. Click Start Menu
            3. Click Control Panel
            4. Click Hardware and Sound
            5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
            6. Expand Display adapters
        • Restart your computer after uninstalling drivers for all display cards
        • Install the driver you selected for the display cards once Windows starts

Now, for the TDR Error Crash

    • H2SO4 said:
These are all stop 0x116 VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE conditions.

It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash. As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds. If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU. Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.
The above quote was taken from https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tml#post280172, which is linked to in usasma's thread about this error. Closely follow the first three posts of usasma's thread outlining STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting and proceed through each step. Let us know if you need further help.

    Thx for reply.

I found out it's not only Crossfire problem. These two days I have been using only one VGA card, it still causes crash. But it's not BSOD anymore. It's like the monitor is either black screen or full of error-like vertical bars (each time might be different color bars) + the audio speaker starts making terrible noise + fans of either cpu or gpu starts running faster + can only reboot by turning off the power. I'm not sure how to collect the dump file from these errors, so if any suggestions. These usually happen after I play MMORPG for a few hours, especially when I was running duo clients.

    - I don't think I'm overclocking any hardware, I have just bought them and didn't do any special setting to them.

    - I have run System File Checker 3 times as recommended. It looks like no system corruption detected. Please find the attachment for 'sfcdetails.txt '.

    - I think the Crossfire problem might have been solved as I mentioned at #3, since I don't get BSOD on Catalyst ver.12.3 anymore. The remaining problem is the one I addressed above. I have tried re-installed the VGA driver and switched between ver.12.3 & 12.4, but can't solve this problem.

    - About TDR, I'm not sure if the problem I'm having right now is TDR anymore? Anyway, that's a lot of information from usasma's thread. I'm still reading and trying some. Hope I will get some luck.

    Thanks.

SFC does indeed look clean. On the TDR link, also check the 2nd page as there is another, more robust graphics diagnostics site linked there.

Also, 12.x drivers have been causing issues on some systems of late. I would recommend trying 11.x versions and seeing if things are more reliable.

11.8 has been a requirement for newer games.. Don't try anything lower.

looks like only ver.12.3+ support Radeon HD 7800 series as I searched on AMD website. Can I try lower drivers anyway?

They should work.. but I really don't think you need to downgrade. I've been running 12.3 for about a week without any issues, and have been meaning to upgrade to 12.4 (but it will show 12.3 in revision information)
