    Multiple BSOD, 1e, 7e, 3b

My wife's computer has started crashing recently.

We just moved, and the second day after setting her computer up again it has started crashing. The only recent changes to the setup were:
1 - We changed internet providers and have been using the Wireless Router that Telus provided.
2 - We had to reconnect her printer (HP Officejet 4500), which we usually connect to wirelessly.
No new software or other hardware has been installed.

Because we were moving, she just completed a backup on an external HDD (thank god) so I'm thinking the best thing might be to just do a re-install of Windows 7. I read a few previous help posts and some identified AVG as a possible problem, so I uninstalled it. But the crashes persist. Running in safe mode

I've just run System Restore to a point before the move, and it went into Windows Error Recovery. Unfortunately I was away while it was running, so I didn't see if there was a BSoD. I started it normally, and it came up with a dialogue window that says the System Restore was completed successfully, but the display has just gone insane and there are rows of distorted display now, where fragments of the display are moving randomly across the screen at the top, middle and bottom. Mouse and keyboard aren't responding. I did a hard restart and the PC made a droning/buzzing noise and wouldn't start up. I did another hard restart and now the computer would not start up at all. I did another hard restart and it has now allowed me to restart in safe mode.

I've used the BSOD File Collector before I attempted the System Restore, but didn't have time to zip the files up and transfer them over to my laptop. Now the computer will only allow me to run it in safe mode, so I can't install winzip to zip up the jcgriff2 folder. I tried to run perfmon but it returns with an Error that states The system cannot find the path specified. I've attached the dmp files from all of the BSoD's I could.

    System info:
    - Windows 7 Home Premium x64
    - It is the original OS
    - It was OEM with the Gateway desktop
    - Hardware is all factory, as purchased a year or so ago, as is the OS

Please let me know what the best course of action is. My technical proficiency is limited, so if it would be best to just reinstall Windows and use the backup file that could be done.

    Thank you.

Multiple different BSOD's usually indicate a hardware problem (with plenty of caveats).
Moving can jostle a computer - so I have to wonder if something inside the case has wiggled loose. Check around inside the case and reseat all of the connections.

Please provide this information for a more complete analysis: https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

Chipset drivers date from 2009 and should be updated ASAP.
Video drivers date from 2011 and should be updated ASAP

dgderdrv.sys dates from 2010 - if associated with Samsung KIES, it needs to be updated also.

Beyond that, start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs

Thanks, John. Right now I'm considering re-installing Windows 7 from scratch since we have the backups of everything personal and the computer isn't stable long enough to try to download or install any other programs. Should I just skip straight to that, or should I be trying something else?

I opened up the case and checked all the connections, and popped out and re-inserted the RAM. After doing that, the computer seemed to run fine for about 20 minutes but now, it will only start up about one in every four tries. When it does, it doesn't even BSoD anymore. It either freezes outright or just dies before starting. I'm kind of at a loss. I can't even keep it open in safe mode long enough to try to zip up the files to get you more details.

Let me know what I can do.

It won't hurt to wipe and reinstall Windows - but there's a good chance it may not solve anything.
Try running from a bootable disk of any sort - does it freeze/shutdown then? If so, then it's most likely to be a hardware problem. Have you looked inside the case to see if anything is detached/unhooked? Have you checked to ensure that all the fans are running?

When I analyze a system, I look to see if it's:
    - a 3rd party (non-Windows) problem
    - a hardware problem
    - a Windows problem

Most common are 3rd party - but the fact that you were moving increases the likelyhood of a hardware problem. Windows is least likely to cause your problems.

So, a clean install of Windows will help to rule out 3rd party problems (and Windows problems) - so continued problems are likely to be hardware.

Here's how I suggest you do a "clean" install (which will maximize the chances of ruling out 3rd party and Windows issues):
Backup, Wipe, and "Clean Install" of Windows
For testing purposes, it's best to install Windows "clean".
This is, basically, installing it the way that Microsoft intended (using drivers from Windows Update).
This procedure is for Windows 7 and Vista.

You will need your installation/recovery DVD(s) before you start. Once you wipe the hard drive there's no going back!!!

    1. Backup all your data.
This will wipe everything off of your hard drive, so anything that you want to keep will need to be saved elsewhere.

NOTE: If this is due to an infection, remember to scan the data with another system's current antivirus in order to locate and remove any malware.
NOTE: Disconnect any additional hard drives (internal and external) that you may have installed. This may break any multi-boot setups that you have, so be prepared to conduct recovery operations on them once you're done. Don't forget that, if this is due to an infection, the additional hard drives may be infected also.

    2. Connect the system to the internet (if the system says disconnect from the Internet, then do so).

    3. Use one of these free utilities to wipe the hard drive clean:
    KillDisk ( Freeware Download Active@ KillDisk ).
DBAN ( DBAN Download | Darik's Boot And Nuke )
This will also delete any recovery partitions on the system - so the installation/recovery DVD's are essential!!!

    4. Install Windows by booting from the installation/recovery DVD - DO NOT tweak any settings!!!

    5. Visit Windows Update and get all updates

    6. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)

    7. Visit Windows Update and get the Service Packs for your system. (usually under Important Updates).

    8. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates

    9. Download, install, and update a free antivirus so you don't get infected while testing ( Free AntiVirus ).

    10. Test to see if the problem remains.
If the problems persist, then the problem is most likely with your hardware.
If the problems are gone, then proceed with installing the latest version of your favorite programs, testing after each one for errors.

CAVEAT: If you have an Asus motherboard, check the date on the C:\Windows\System32\driver\ASACPI.sys file. 2004/2005 is a problem, 2009/2010 is OK. Updates are available at the Asus support website.

CAVEAT: If you have a Sony system, make sure that you DO NOT have the 2007 (or earlier) version of the Sony Firmware Extension Parser (SFEP.sys). Update this driver immediately!!!

Thanks very much John. This is embarrassing but your post cued me to check the fan and it definitely wasn't working. My wife went out and picked up a new fan and we put it in, and everything seems fine. We'll still update those drivers, but it seems to be fixed. Thanks for the help!
