DXGI.DLL error related to Windows Live Movie Maker

I was using Windows Live Movie Maker and working on a tribute to my sister who passed. I decided (wrong thing to do) to update and downloaded Windows Live Essentials (because there was a newer update of Movie Maker). Then, movie maker would not start up. Reinstalled several times. Then I read somewhere about DXDIAG. Then tried dxdiag in Run command.

THIS is the error message:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dxgi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact yoru system administrator or the software vendor for support.

After I press ok, I get another message saying:

Error: Could not load dxdiagn.dll

Not sure what to do:( My goal is to continue working on my video tribute. I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials. Tried to reinstall DIRECTX, states I have the latest version. I used several scans (SFC/scannow and others for malware).

I have an ACER Aspire 1430z-4677, Windows Home Premium (64).

Hi, not sure if you got my last message. I am going to try and do a REPAIR INSTALL tonight or tomorrow night. I read somewhere to save drivers (sorry to say I don't know the steps to do such). Is that necessary??? I have all my files backed up.

My other question is that you are pretty confident that this will work so I ask should I give up on WLMM? I don't want to download and install the whole program (Windows LIve Essentials). Where can I download the Movie Maker program only from?

THANKS SO MUCH.

When you install Windows Live Essentials, you have the option to install only specific aspects of the program.

As for backing up your drivers, you can backup the install tools, but I think it best that you just install and let Windows find the appropriate drivers. If after Windows installs the drivers you have any missing drivers, we can help you track them down.

Thank you for the response. I don't remember seeing an option on WLE to only install the WLMM.

The second option there says "Choose the programs you want to install"

Then you can choose to update programs already installed which includes WLMM

No I didn't do the REPAIR INSTALL as of yet. Hopefully tomorrow night or Thursday.

Just preparing ahead with my questions. I think the WLE download where I thought it would be better to get the latest version started all my problems. I just hope my PROJECT can work with WLMM 2011 (I don't think my project was done with that version).

I just reread you question. I thought you were asking if I had done the repair install. Are you asking if I have Windows 7 SP1? I have Windows 7 but how do I know if it is with SP1 OR without SP1

If you don't have SP1 then you probably don't have the rest of the 60 or so updates and fixes that came after it. :(

OH. Now, I am wondering based on my original post in this thread if this could have caused my problem with WLMM AND DIRECTX??? Should I still do the REPAIR INSTALL? Which one should I download?

Thanks so much for your time and expertise.

I would un-install WLE first then update Windows. DirectX is part of Windows and I believe DX-10 is part of the updates. After your PC is up to date, reboot and run a sfc /verifyonly from an elevated command prompt and if no errors then web-install WLE. During the install, you'll have the option to select Move Maker or whatever.

Use the web-install directly from Microsoft for Windows Live Essentials. Do NOT use any other download site for this.

I sure do ask alot of questions. I am doing a repair install WITHOUT SP1 (turning off security software and firewall). Should I download it to my HD or a flash drive?

Download what?
What do you get when you run sfc /verifyonly from an elevated command prompt (Run as Administrator)?
If you don't get errors then why do a repair install?
Bring Windows up to to date and that will more than likely fix your problem.

What shows on the bottom right of your System screen as above?

Carwiz,

When I originally posted my question/problem USASMA recommended a repair install. So, I thought your post was a continuation of that recommendation. I have uninstalled WLE and did do a Windows update at some point during this six day period. So, I was asking if I had to download the ISO file for the repair onto a flashdrive rather than the HD.

I have used sfc /scannow several times and there are errors. Here is a screenshot.

Those errors indicate that you should do the repair install as mentioned prior.

You can download the ISO file anywhere you want. You will need to double click it and burn it to a DVD, though. Do you have a DVD available?

I will go with the forum's link to do a repair install that was given in the first response to my thread. I can attach an external DVD to my notebook or use a flashdrive; I think I need the flashdrive since my DVDs are only like 4.7GB. I think I have to download the ISO then use the DVD/USB download tool (not sure of the sequence) and follow the directions.

Thanks for your response, I am a novice when it comes to "repairs" and appreciate that there are people sharing their expertise.
