new laptop, BSOD caused by ntoskrnl.exe+7f1c0?

Hello, i recently got a new HP Pavillion dv6-6c50us about a week ago.
    Code:
    • Intel Core i5-2450M
    • 6GB DDR3 RAM (1 x 2GB, 1 x 4GB)
    • 750GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
    - x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? - Windows Home Premium 64bit - the original installed OS on the system? - Yes - an OEM or full retail version? - OEM - What is the age of system (hardware)? NEW - What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) NEW
Today i received a BSOD while listening to turntable.fm . For those who dont know what turntable.fm is, its like pandora, but theres DJ's that take turns playing music.
i have no idea how that can give me a BSOD.

Having only gotten this laptop a week ago, i was terrifed. So i restarted my computer and restored to a previous point and everything seemed normal, until i noticed my physical memory was at 50%+ when i had nothing open. usually it is at 19%. Windows and BIOS is reading the laptop only having 2GBs of RAM, when it has really 6GBs. So i reinsert the 4GB ram stick, and everything is back to normal. 6 Hours later, i was listening to turntable.fm again and i was able to recreate the same BSOD. im guessing the 4gb ram stick is going bad ? idk.

    Heres a BSODScreen viewer dump

    edit:
i also ran a memtest86+ and both rams seems to pass. should i do 7-8 passes?

i decided to experment and found that if i switch around the ramsticks in the slots, i found when i put the 4gb ramstick into the 2gb original ramslot, the computer would now sometimes read 4gbs of ram instead of sometimes reading 2gb of ram from earlier. so im guessing the ramslot where the 2gb ramstick originally sat is faulty. or i could be wrong idk.

alright fixed. i could do the perfmon /report command, so i had to do it the other way by making a new data collector set name for user defined.

i also ran a memtest86+ and both rams seems to pass. only did 1 pass. should i do 7-8 passes?

Thanks for those dumps. I'm not at my PC at the mo as I'm out so can't look at them. I'll get back to you when I can, probably in a couple of hours.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, there is only one dump in the report. This makes it difficult to debug the issue. The BSOD dump you gave me does not give a definitive cause for your BSOD. It pointed at ntkrnlmp.exe which is a system file and very unlikely to cause a BSOD.

You say you have run memtest.. Read through this tutorial and focus specifically on part 3, what to do if you have errors. If you work through the entire tutorial carefully and do the tests for 6-8 passes each time, we can work out which stick of RAM may be faulty.

Also check your HDD for errors using Seatools. Download and create a bootable version of the Seatools for DOS program as described here.

i got three more BSOD's, one after defragging my hard drive and one playing League of Legends. i decided to just factory restore my laptop, and the first time i did it, i got a BSOD half way, but the second time worked. Everything fresh, i check the RAM again and it says 2GB. i notice every time i get a BSOD, the ramslot for the 4gb ramstick stops working and i would have to resit it to get it to work again. Everything is working fine right now. ill have to wait and see if a factory restore worked or not..

It is possible you have a bad ram slot on your mobo. Try running memtest but swapping the ram modules over and changing slots when you run each test. See my previous post for the tutorial

i spoke with an assistant from HP, and yes my laptop had a bad ram slot. Since my laptop is only a week old, they said i could send it in for a repair or replace it from the shop i got it from according to HP's Policy.

That's great. Doesn't matter which one they do as long as it works again.

Don't forget to mark this thread as solved!

    Glad I could help :)
