PC randomly freezes + weird sound

Before you proceed with the following, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? Strip down your system to run only the bare essentials: one RAM module, the CPU, motherboard, one hard disk, one graphics card (or use onboard graphics if you have it), keyboard, mouse, and one monitor. See how the system behaves by running Windows for twice as long as it typically takes for you to get a crash. If it is stable, add one piece of hardware back at a time until you get crashes again. Take notes of what hardware you add and how the system responds to the hardware changes.

As you add and remove hardware, follow these steps for ESD safety:

1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
4. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.

Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.


When I say bare essentials, that also means do not use any USB devices beyond your mouse and/or keyboard. You may also consider running with a different mouse and/or keyboard to see if one of those devices is at fault.

ok thanks, I'll try to do this, also if it'll require so much time...cause the crashes happens once in 1-2 days!
I also use various usb cable extensione (one for the mouse, one for the external hard drive, and one for the wifi pen)

My nose is telling me that is a ram problem, cause it's really random. 6 hours with memtest maybe wasn't enough for 16gb (and i don't think memtest can identify everything, cause a friend of mine had bad ram, and memtest went fine).

I actually had the same problem with my old machine, but it happend only when i was gaming (and was resolved downclocking the GPU while gaming)...now the problem is random (happens during web navigation, flash gaming, 3d gaming, audio editing application, doing nothing, ecc).
I could try to keep the gpu downclocked during normal use, and see what happens.
Also if the best chance is running the system with one ram at the time.

At least is not a wifi usb key problem, cause it happened when i was using the lan

p.s. i bet that if it's a ram problem, it'll present itself in the 4th (and last) ram i test lol
My 8800 gt actually has 5 years, and maybe her time has come lol

You could try running with 8 GB, see if the system is stable by running twice as long as it normally takes to get a crash on average, and then trying the other 8 GB.

If both sets of 8 GB work, you know the RAM is fine and we can probably make some adjustments to get it to work.


Remember to avoid static damage to the PC during RAM swapping.

I've been a little busy lately, so i started the tests 2 days ago.
I'm currently working with only 1 ram (4gb), and in 2 days i've haven't had any crash so far.
The only strange thing that happened (and also happened sometimes with all the 4 rams), was that at the startup the system won't load and stayed black. maybe that can be a os problem and not an hardware one.
at the moment, let's stay focused on the freezing problem i think i'll run each ram for 3 or 4 days, since the crashes actually happened randomly (once every 3-4 days)

I usually recommend running for twice as long as it normally takes to get a crash. If you are up to it, you could run for 6 to 8 days instead.

It's your choice how thoroughly you want to test the RAM. Let me know if the system loading issue occurs again, too.

yeah, i think i'll do as u suggest! i prefer being certain that a ram is ok
so all the work will take maximum 1 month
I hope i don't have to work much with audio recording / editing in these days, cause 4gb of ram are just essential for that job lol

Once you know for sure one way or the other whether it was a RAM problem, let us know. Also post again if you need any help.
