BSOD after wake up on Windows 7 64 bit Professional

    Hi,

I'm consistently getting a BSOD after putting my laptop to sleep and waking it up. The logon screen shows, and then after 10 seconds I get a BSOD. I installed the new OS into my Dell Vostro 1720 after upgrading to 8GB of memory and a OCZ Vertex 4 SATA III SDD.

    I have tried

    * turning off 'allow hybrid sleep'
    * turning of write caching
    * updating all of my drivers (using driverupdate.net - yes I paid :S). However, it could have missed a few. Also explicitly went to nvidia website to download latest drivers. One thing I'm suspicous of is whether the Intel Chipset (45 express) is up to date, as I've read that might cause issues (especially around the AHCI driver?), but I went to Intel's website and the link to the newest driver was broken.

The SSD is new, but maybe firmware needs to be updated (which will be difficult as it's my boot drive).

I also have AVG running - could that maybe cause an issue?

    Dump attached - output is:

    Code:

    0: kd> !analyze -v
    *******************************************************************************
    *                                                                             *

Please provide this info: https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html The potential for a "fix" with only one memory dump is very, very small.

I have to wonder if appliand.sys is at fault. Although the memory dump doesn't point to it, previous threads have shown this sort of error - and it took MSINFO32 to pin the blame on Applian Technology and it's video streaming app. Please uninstall it to test and see.

You have several drivers that date from 2009, I'd suggest updating them. They're listed in the listing further down in this post. Immediately after the listing is a series of links that have more information about those drivers.

Beyond that, there's no immediate cause pinpointed in this single memory dump.

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs

    - Further info on BSOD error messages available at: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html
    - Info on how to troubleshoot BSOD's (DRAFT): http://www.carrona.org/userbsod.html

    Hi,

I thought I had updated the msg with the BSOD info attached. In any case, it's now on the message. I'll look into your post in further detail tomorrow.

    Thanks :)

No updates since SP1 was installed. There should be at least 75 updates (some systems have up to 110). Please visit Windows Update and get all available updates.

Several issues with disk hardware mentioned in MSINFO32. Please run this free diagnostic on ALL hard drives: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

I tried uninstalling Replay Media catcher but no luck (unless it leaves things hanging around in the system). Not sure whyyou're seeing that Windows updates are outstanding - after the initial OS install, I basically spent the next 40 minutes doing the checking/installing/rebooting loop until Windows update said there were no more updates available..? Now that it's been mentioned, I remember during one of these cycles I unplugged the power while an update was installing. Upon reboot it said installation failed and woudln't reinstall, but I kept on rebooting/installing until the error went away. Perhaps this is causing an issue?

Clicked on a few driver links to see what was said, but wasn't sure how to then go get the latest driver (maybe you have to go to the manufacturer's website?). I'll have another look tonight.

Do you think maybe the problem could be related to the SDD? Perhaps new firmware is required?

Not sure if this is relevant, but I've seen threads where people have reported that turning off hybrid sleep mode, disabling write caching on disks,.. have fixed things.

    Thanks

    Taras

SSD issues are starting to go away. It used to be that there were problems with SSD's (less than 6 months ago) - but most have been solved with controller updates and firmware updates.

My suspicion is that one of the hard drives - either the platter based one or the SSD - has problems.
Run the above test on the platter based one.

I tried downloading the Hitachi DFT.. burning it to disc.. verified it. Tried to boot from it but DFT just hung, probably something to do with hard drive - Hitachi DFT hangs - Causes and workarounds? - Super User. I tried changing the BIOS SATA setting from AHCI to ATA, but this didn't help either.

For the OCZ Vertex SDD, I downloaded SeaTools, but also was having problems.. the problem hung with a 'can't open.. invalid opcode at.. <address>' error message (both when SATA was AHCI and ATA).

Even though it will probably not fix the problem, I decided to upgrade the firmware on the OCZ, which required me to wipe the drive (better to do it now when there's not that much data on there).

I don't think the HDD is at fault because I physically removed it, and the problem was still there.

Currently updating drivers (again), so I'll post again after that has finished.

    Thanks

    Taras

    Success! (I hope)

Problem is now no longer - updated the firmware on my SDD (which required a wipe), clean install of windows 7. Kept on going through Windows Update until there weren't anymore updates. Then loaded up driversupdate program (from driversupdate.net), and installed all of them, except for the 'standard VGA driver' which failed. 'Sleep' option is still greyed out on the menu, so a google search later suggests that it could be due to not having the correct video driver installed (at this point in time I still have the standard driver installed). Go to nvidia, d'load the driver for GeForce 9600M GS, reboot, and hope.

Sleep menu item is now available.. hit sleep. Hit the power button to wake up.. and it works!

Your comment: "No updates since SP1 was installed. There should be at least 75 updates (some systems have up to 110). Please visit Windows Update and get all available updates." was suspicious. As I wrote, I was dilligent in making sure all Windows Updates were installed and available. I tripped over the power cord before while Windows Update was showing the 'do not turn off computer' message before, but things 'seemed' to work afterwards (apart from a message saying corrupted/failed update), so at teh time didn't pay much attention.

However, in retrospect, everytime I started up the computer.. sometimes every few hours, windows would report 'new updates', which I actually think were always the same updates. That coupled with what you were seeing re: missing updates is a bit suspicious.

Happy to send you my system details now that everything is up and running if you'd like to diff and see what has changed.

I haven't installed all of my software yet, so hopefully the problem won't come back.

I think it was the firmware upgrade on the SSD that did it.
Keep an eye open, but I hope your problems are finished!

    Good luck!
