    BSOD during Windows 7 startup error *** STOP 0x000000ED


    Specs
    - Samsung N150 Plus (1GB RAM, Intel Atom processor)
    - Windows 7 Starter x86 OEM (Original OS)
    - Age - Just over a year old and no OS re-installation
    More specs - Support for NP-N150P

    Hi,

    I have my friends net-book and all of a sudden it generated a error where it had to be restarted and every-time I switch it on it says that windows failed to start and comes up with options of startup repair or start windows normally if i click start-up repair it just comes up with the windows 7 screen and a pointer, i can move the pointer around but it will not do anything else, also if i press start windows normally it flashes with a blue screen and restarts itself and goes back to the start-up repair option, i had disabled automatic restart on system failure and got this information from the BSOD:

    UMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

    I have tried all the options on F8 advanced options, have tried to use windows 7 repair disk but external CD drive (which works) will not be recognized in the boot menu and the inbuilt recovery will not work and if i use the repair your computer option it just comes up with the windows 7 screen and a pointer, i can move the pointer around but it will not do anything else. I have also tried the Samsung Recovery Solution 4 (F4 on boot up) but it just comes up with the logo and the pointer and does nothing after that. And also I do not want to do anything physical to the netbook e.g take out the hard drive or anything like that, this is a last resort before I have to take it to a repair shop.

    Why are you against taking out the hard drive? Is it difficult to get to?

    The hard drive is typically within a panel that is easy to remove with a screwdriver. I honestly wonder if the hard drive is not connected properly to the system... If you decide to check, here are the steps to follow:
    • The first thing to check is whether the hard disk is physically connected to the motherboard properly. To do so:
      • Shut down and turn off the computer
      • Remove the AC Adapter
      • Remove the battery
      • Hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds to close the circuit and drain any residual power
      • Remove the panel on the underside of the laptop where the hard disk is housed
      • Remove and re-insert the hard disk by sliding it away from the connector and then gently but firmly pressing it back into the connector (no screws should need to be removed to do this step)
      • Replace the panel on the underside of the laptop to cover the hard disk
      • Replace the battery
      • Replace the AC Adapter
      • Turn on the computer and see how it responds

      Post back once these steps have been implemented whether the system is stable. Sometimes these crashes can occur due to a loose connection.

    • Reset the hardware/software connections for the BIOS and clear corrupted memory from the system.
      1. Shut down and turn off the computer.

        cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices."       4. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
        power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
        and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
      5. (If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
        and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
      6. Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

    • Clear the CMOS by entering the BIOS (you may need to find the netbook manual for steps to access the BIOS), go to the EXIT screen in the BIOS, select Load Setup/Optimized Defaults, select Save, and select Exit.

    I'm against taking out the hard drive because I don't want to to anything wrong that might break the hard drive all together or something else inside the net-book (I know it might sound stupid) . And i dint don't to faff about going inside of it as-well

    You will have to hope the BIOS steps resolve it. It does not look like your friend's netbook has an easy to reach hard disk. The manufacturer would need to replace/fix it. It is good that you were cautious. I just pulled up the manual, and now I know what we are dealing with.

    These netbooks are a pain to troubleshoot. All the hardware seems to always be difficult to reach. Half the time, the battery is built into the system and cannot be removed, too. At least you do not have that issue.
