BSOD 1-2 times/day

Hello all,

I have bought a new computer 1 month ago and almost immediately it started BSOD. It occures 1-2 times per day. When I first open it, it BSODs after approx 30-40 minutes and then most of the times it doesn't crashe again, even if I use it all day.

It can BSOD anytime. Surfing Firefox, playing Diablo (the only game I play), programming at java.

I have read forums and updated my SSD hard drive firmware just 2 days ago. I have OCZ Vertex 3 120GB. I have read that ssd drives cause BSOD and updating the firmware didn't resolve the problem.

I have 8GB memory Corsair Vengeance. As I tun Win x32, the system reckons only 4GB. My next step is to format and go with Win x64 to check if this is the problem.

I have motherboard drivers as they came from the manufacturer's cd but updated nvidia to the last one.

Were you aware the above problem? Check you Device Manager and re-install your audio drivers from your Motherboard support site or vendor support site (HP, DELL, etc.).


Security Software: ??? Make sure to install security software. I recommend either of these:

• Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows coupled with Malwarebytes. Do not start the free trial of Malwarebytes. Just use the standalone version, update it, and scan your computer once a week with Malwarebytes and with Microsoft Security Essentials.
  
  
• Good and Free system security combination.

After installing your security software, update it, and then run full scans today with each program. Report back the results of the scans.


It looks like your SSD is having some problems. It may be disappearing from the system.

Try doing a power cycle of the SSD. The following steps should be carried out and take ~1 hour to complete.

1. Power off the system.
2. Remove all power supplies (ac adapter then battery for laptop, ac adapter for desktop)
3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and drain all components of power.
4. Reconnect all power supplies (battery then ac adapter for laptop, ac adapter for desktop)
5. Turn on the system and enter the BIOS (see your manual for the steps to enter the BIOS)
6. Let the computer remain in the BIOS for 20 minutes.
7. Follow steps 1-3 and physically remove the SSD from the system by disconnecting the cables for a desktop or disconnecting the drive from the junction for a laptop.
8. Leave the drive disconnected for 30 seconds to let all power drain from it.
9. Replace the drive connection(s) and then do steps 4-8 again.
10. Repeat steps 1-4.
11. Start your computer normally and run Windows.

While that may not be your drive, a power cycle should be the same on all SSD drives. See how the system responds after the SSD power cycle.

- I have just done the steps you proposed for the hard drive. I will come back to tell you if this worked. Up to now its working fine.

- Concerning the Audio Device. First of all I have sound normally. When I installed the windows, I loaded the HD Audio drivers from motherboard's cd. But also, I have just downloaded and installed the updated ones from the web page. It has still this problem, it didn't fix it. I even uninstall the drivers from device manager (right click - uninstall), reinstalled the new and still the same.

I don't know what is going on and why this is happening.

If you have sound, then it is probably a duplicate device that somehow ended up being detected by Windows. It may not be of too much concern.

How is the system performing at present?

I was waiting a few days to pass so I can check it in this time term.

So, after 3 days. The first two days it was working perfectly. It didn't BSOD once and it seemed like it was fixed.

But today, after only 5 minutes I opened it, it threw a f4 BSOD again and after that it went ok for the rest of the day. I will do this cycle again but I want to let it one or maybe a couple of days more to check if it still BSODs and the frequency.

It is going to the right direction though. I am amazed that this was the solution or at least a huge part of it. I would have never done it without you, no matter how much I would have searched it in the net.

Also, for the SSD, you may get more stability if you make sure the following are up to date:

• SSD firmware
• BIOS Version
• Chipset Drivers
• Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
• If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.
