regular random reboots

Hi all,

I experience random reboots since a day or two, they happen every hour between 60 and 70 minutes of the last reboot. I already checked the event log and it only says a critical error but no reason identified. I haven't changed anything in the hardware the last couple of months. I have no idea what is doing this, hope you guys can help?

For starters I'd suggest looking through this troubleshooting guide preapred by one of the Forum experts. Random reboots could be caused by malware, a software issue or a hardware problem. Using the troubleshooting steps could help to isolate the issue.

It would also help a lot if you could post your system specs. At the top of any Forum page click "User CP" and on the left "Edit System Spec". You can get most of your specs by following this:

Thx for the help, I tried most options in the tutorial, except the harddisk check, is that also applicabble for SSD? I have Crucial M4.
I cleanly reinstalled my computer yesterday, but the problem still exists, once a while it still instantly reboots without any warning.
Something new is that since a day or 2 now sometimes, about 1 in 3 times when the computer get rebooted it gives an error message during start up and hangs there.
saying:
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

I checkd in bios and my M4 is the first boot option.

Try doing a power cycle of the SSD. The following steps should be carried out and take ~1 hour to complete.

1. Power off the system.
2. Remove all power supplies (ac adapter then battery for laptop, ac adapter for desktop)
3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and drain all components of power.
4. Reconnect all power supplies (battery then ac adapter for laptop, ac adapter for desktop)
5. Turn on the system and enter the BIOS (see your manual for the steps to enter the BIOS)
6. Let the computer remain in the BIOS for 20 minutes.
7. Follow steps 1-3 and physically remove the SSD from the system by disconnecting the cables for a desktop or disconnecting the drive from the junction for a laptop.
8. Leave the drive disconnected for 30 seconds to let all power drain from it.
9. Replace the drive connection(s) and then do steps 4-8 again.
10. Repeat steps 1-4.
11. Start your computer normally and run Windows.

While that may not be your drive, a power cycle should be the same on all SSD drives. See how the system responds after the SSD power cycle.


Also, make sure your SSD firmware is up to date.

I think updating the SSD firmware did the trick, I read somewhere that the crucial can get those errors after being online just over 5k hours, which was the case with me.
