Curiosity: why can't windows search find *.dmp files?

I had my first bluescreen yesterday on a particular Windows 7 system I depend on [will be a bsod post after gathering data], and in effort to debug I used windows search [explorer] to find the .dmp files. It came up empty handed on a search of the entire C: drive. Using "Everything" i find several dozen *.dmp files [score for them!].

I'm assuming the fail is due to default search parameters obfuscating/ignoring system filetypes? hidden files? OS-related files? even though I have folder view options set to expose such?

If someone could pls enlighten me on this I would appreciate it. in the meantime my hatred for Windows Search function continues to grow. Worst feature of the entire project.

Let there be light!

You probably need to tell your Win 7 to also index the \Windows folder and its subfolders.

I agree with you in one sense. I would like to see everything be the default, but then probably many would complain about the size of the search index and the time required.

This little line will show you where your dumps are located:

run cmd.exe
enter following and hit enter
wmic recoveros get /all /format:list > %userprofile%\desktop\dmpinfo.txt

enter, followed by hitting enter:
EXIT

You will see that you have a file called dmpinfo.txt on your desktop.

Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify button |
expand the folder for your system drive and checkmark the folder that holds your dump file. I checkmark the entire windows folder but that's your choice.
