Windows 7 BSOD 0x9f

I've been getting a BSOD every few days, usually while playing games such as Trine or Morrowind. They are all reported as DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, and are usually to be 0x03. BlueScreenView tells me it's ntoskml.exe which doesn't help me figure out what's wrong.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. It's the upgrade version, meaning I installed WinXP on a clean, wiped drive, then upgraded it to Win7. I'm not sure exactly when I did this last but I think it was about a year ago.

Most of the parts of my system come from the last two years. I upgraded the motherboard, PSU and video card in March 2012 when the Nvidia GTX 680 was released; I never experienced BSODs before that. This week I updated to Nvidia's latest 304.79 beta drivers, but that did not stop the BSODs.

The motherboard I replaced was an Intel DP67DE, which I didn't think was a huge change (they are both 1155 boards). The BSODs are not frequent, and I had been assuming it was an issue with Nvidia's first GTX 680 drivers which I didn't update until this week (several versions in between seemed to raise more issues than they solved).

Analysis:

Crashes are due to a USB charging device driver. If you have software installed to speed up USB charging, please remove it. These programs put the USB ports in an unnatural power state that can lead to crashes/conflicts. AiChargerPlus.sys was blamed in each crash.

How do I uninstall AiChargerPlus?

I have no ASUS or AiChargerPlus entries in the Programs and Features control panel. ASUS has AiCharger available as a separate installer, but installing and then removing that does not touch AiChargerPlus.sys; it installed and removed AiCharger.sys instead. Ai Suite II from ASUS's web site does not have an installer or uninstaller for AiChargerPlus. The ASUS disc that came with the motherboard showed no installer for AiChargerPlus. I even downloaded the Revo Uninstaller Pro trial and used the Forced Uninstall in Advanced mode on AiChargerPlus.sys, but that only returned "Revo Uninstaller Pro hasn't found any leftover items" and it was not removed.

So I moved AiChargerPlus.sys from its folder and restarted. That disabled all of my USB ports (3.0 and 2.0) which was quite well awkward as all of my keyboards and mice are USB. I managed to get Windows Repair to run to revert to the last Restore Point so the file is back in place and my USB devices are working again.

Googling for "how to remove AiChargerPlus" got me a lot of garbage. This page had some instructions:

but it did not work, returning "ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value" for all four of the things it tries.

In this thread, someone else tries to remove AiChargerPlus.sys but has a lot of trouble doing so and seemed to end up reinstalling Windows:

That thread mentions that "AiChargerPlus should be visible in Device Manager > System devices - or - View > Show hidden devices > Non-plug and play drivers" but it is not visible in either place on my system either.

Finally, I uninstalled Asmedia ASM104x USB 3.0 Host Controller Driver from the Programs and Features control panel, because that is the USB 3.0 driver from the ASUS disk that came with the motherboard. That did not remove AiChargerPlus.sys.

I will be quite irked if I have to reinstall Windows just to get rid of a driver. It shouldn't be this hard! My other concern is that I don't know where the driver came from or how to avoid installing it again.

What about services in general? Start Menu -> Type Services in Search programs and files -> Right click the Services with the big blue gear and small blue gear icon.

In msconfig, the only ASUS entries are "ASUS Com Service", "ASUS HM Com Service" and "ASUS System Control Service". The other non-Microsoft services are all known to me and are not related to USB. Those three ASUS services also appear in Services, and none of the other services listed there appear to be related to AiChargerPlus.sys.
