Also again try this :Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable Verifier - Enable and Disable
Follow the above tutorial, and if a BSOD occurs, please upload the latest dump file.

Afterward run this test : Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark
Do the above test only with the latest drivers, and then Run it until the temperatures stop increasing; should be less then 10 minutes. If you don't see any crazy glitches or distortion on the screen, The test most likely passed. Take note if the Temperature gets too high, or you see Visual artifact - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia to stop the test.

Could this be a psu issue?

PSU malfunction can cause all kinds of weird problems, at one point i assume that if the PUS was at fault than the system should shut down. It doesnt seem to be case.

If you got a black screen while running memtest via USB/DVD medium and you didnt load into windows we could be looking at hardware problems.

Please update your PC specs if you can please.
How many sticks of ram do you have?

Can you run memtest on 1 stick at a time. I suggest 7 passes per stick, I understand this is very time consuming.

If you get a black screen with ALLsticks the problem lies somewhere else. I at this point would rule out the RAM.

Yeah I'm sure i have encountered problems like this before and was the psu

I'm running

I7 930 noctua nh d14 cooler

Corsair dominator tri channel 6gb
Asus px58de mobo
And a super cheap 650 psu no name

if that power supply is a generic, then i don't think it can output 650 watts especially not continueslly. 650 watts may be the PEAK it can provide at some random time and usually sustain for very small duration.

Also a 2-3 year old generic power supply is quite a long time especially if underheavy loads.
Your processor i7 930, may be powerful but it comes with a price. It can consume 150watts while idle to about 400 in full load. (source Review - Intel Core i7-930 CPU Review | bit-tech.net)

Your graphics is also very power hungry which can range from 200 til 480(full load), source Power Consumption And Heat : GeForce GTX 480 And 470: From Fermi And GF100 To Actual Cards!

Your power supply may be at fault, however its to early to tell.

Hi there Chris thanks for the input

It has always been 1 area where i haven't spent much money when i really should

It is also so loud i wouldn't mind buying a new decent psu for quiet'ness almost sounds like static at times or a broken hard drive ticking

Are there any tests which could push the psu?

I was looking at the corsair gs800 series or tx850 are those okay psus?

Edit: what size psu would you recommend for my setup
