Repeated Crashing of Windows Exp on Start-Up, only opens in safe mode

    Hi all,
I know this topic is similar to a number of others that have been posted before but i have not been able to successfully apply any of the solutions to the posts i have found addressing this issue.

It began happening after downloading an .mkv file. initially exp crashed and asked to restart. Did so and all good apart from occasional crashing and restarting.

Now turned lap-top on again and it won't even finish restarting before crashing, and this time there is no escaping the loop.

Tried a restore from before the file was there but for some reason this didn't make any difference!

Currently in safe mode, have disabled all non ms services and all start-up items using msconfig and restarted normally - didn't change anything.

Ran CCleaner and cleaned out temp files and registry and still no change.

After found this site downloaded and ran SF diag tool as instructed in FAQ and copied all 8 files except Minidump folder which is apparently empty. Remaining files attached.

One person has suggested repairing using Windows Installer dvd this doesn't help me as OS was pre-installed and I don't have a DVD.

I have tried not to be dumb about this and to try to fix it without too much fuss but am now at a loss - Please forgive me if this is a trivially simple error! - Can anyone help me with this?

Well for a start, uninstall Zone Alarm & AVG Completely then install Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Uninstall Nero too while we debug!!

Report back after you have done these steps.

    Thanks Ant

    Hi Ant

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly, much appreciated!

Have done as suggested: uninstalled AVG & ZoneAlarm.

However, as i am still only able to use my computer in Safe Mode, i was unable to install the Microsoft Security Essentials - cannot do in safe mode. As a result i am currently not protected, so i will keep this brief.

Have tried to restart again after having uninstalled as instructed, i managed to sneak a peak at the details of the error:

The module in question is the DivxMF something or other, and a second restart yielded: MSVR80.dll or something like that (was sure i remembered these but have now gone! Will write them down next time if it helps).

So it's not even the same module that is crashing each time! Stranger and stranger...

What do you make of it?

    Hello again Anthony

Have run sfc /scannow twice in safe and found no integrity violations.

Can we figure a way to remove the file i downloaded before it all went pete tong. Do you think that might help?

Problem is when i press delete on the file it just says "preparing to recycle" forever and nothing actually happens. When you right-click and select properties nothing happens at all as if you hadn't done anything.

Have tried using elevated command prompt using DEL /S /Q C:\Users\owner\Desktop\downloads\File.mkv" but again not even this works.

    Er... what now?

Confirmation by the way, the module that keeps crashing is: MSVCR80.dll with exception code: C0000005

    If that helps

    Hello?

    Still stuck here.

As i said i don't have the original dvd to reinstall so the last part of the tutorial is not possible.

Have run scan now about 8 times and there are no violations! The file refuses to budge, what can i do?

At this rate i'll have to take it to a repair shop tomorrow and pay an arm and a leg to get windows re-installed, overhauled etc.

Can anyone give me an alternative?
