BSOD 0x00000116 atikmpag.sys when playing games

I have had this issue for a while but only recently did I realise that it has resulted in a BSOD, before I when the display had gone I had just rebooted the machine. However after leaving it for a minute or two it BSOD'd and I finally got to see an error to start debugging this problem!

This error occurs seemingly randomly when I am playing games on my EyeFinity setup (Three Monitors), sometimes I can play a game solidly for 5 hours with no problem. or I can start a game and get this error almost instantly. This has lead me to believe that it isn't an issue with a specific game as it happens with pretty much all of them.

The BSOD is STOP 0x00000116 atikmpag.sys

Attached is the dump from SF_Diagnostic_Tool (What an awesome idea).

And here is my system specs:

    • Windows 7 x64
    • AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
    • MSI 890FXA-GD70
    • Crucial Ballistix 4x2GB
    • Radeon HD 5870
    • Asus Xonar DS
    • 1TB Seagate 7200.12
    • OCZ 700W
    • Thermaltake 2500RPMx2
    • HP 17" Monitors x3 (EyeFinity)

I have googled around this and all the solutions seem to vary greatly so I have decided to try here. Thanks a lot for any support it is greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot for your reply it is really appreciated!

I don't seem to be able to find any updates for my wireless network adapter (Atheros AR9285), and I have been installing the updates offered by ATI's Catalyst Control Center. I assumed that these were updating the drivers but now I am thinking they are only updating their software CCC.

After looking on ATI's site for new drivers the only thing they offer for download is the CCC version 12.8 which what I already have, what should I try doing?

    Thanks a gain!

Check this link: Latest drivers for Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter - HP Support Forum

Did you uninstall the ATI drivers that were previously installed?

Windows says the Atheros drivers are up to date, even when I ask it to look for drivers downloaded from the above link, so I am reluctant to install extra ones so to speak...

I uninstalled and then re-downloaded the ATI drivers, I now have CCC version 12.6 not 12.8, so I know have older drivers! Not sure how that works; anyway I checked for updates and it found 12.8 so I installed that. Which takes me back to where I was, I'm a little stumped at the moment :/

    Thanks again!

Go ahead and install the Atheros drivers please.

And go through this thread for possible fixes:

Well I have not been able to figure out a way to update the network card drivers :/

I ran a benchmark on my graphics card though and the temperature peaked at 92C, that does seem really high to me, perhaps that is my problem?

    92C is too high.
Do you have a spare graphics card which you can test with?
Does your computer crash only during gaming or during normal usage as well?

Unfortunately that is my only card, and I don't have on-board graphics either! I shall try and find a way to keep it cool...

And it only crashes whilst gaming... what leads me to believe that it isn't a hardware issue is that I have ran some incredibly GPU intensive software (prime generating) and it has reached high temps but not actually crashed... where as games tend to do so.

Do you know of any software that could put an overlay on my games showing the GPU temp, kind of like fraps?

    Thanks again!
