BSOD playing any game, dxgmms1.sys - RAM problem?

Hi, I have been receiving these BSOD's for a long time and this is mostly when I playing a game, it sometimes takes an hour or 2, sometimes a few mins into a game. dxgmms1.sys is the main one that I'm receiving, I am also getting different ones but this is the most occurring.

I had a temporary solution to it which was overclocking the CPU. I overclocked it by using the CPU level up feature in my mobo BIOS, I was choosing the i965. However when I did this I realized my RAM capacity went down to 4GB from 6GB, so I was losing one whole stick of RAM.

My first thought was faulty RAM so a few days ago I ran a Memtest and got a few errors after 8 passes, these were mainly errors in test 5 and 8. After doing a little research I found out that sometimes its not always the RAM which is faulty when these errors occur so I decided to update most of the outdated drivers including the NIC. I had also updated the graphics card drivers as well as reinstalling them. I had also run prime95 and after about 2 mins an error came up and stopped one of the workers. I have also looked at the temps while doing this and they seem fine.

I have attached the most recent BSOD after playing BF3 multipayer for an hour. So is the problem just in the RAM or is there a defective driver or maybe there's a fault with other hardware?

    SPECS
    Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme
    CPU: Intel i7 920
RAM: 6GB OCZ Gold Triple Channel
    GPU: Radeon HD 5770 1GB

(CPU was overclocked for a short while about a year ago but due to high temps I had to bring it down to default settings, and all the settings are default at this moment)

Amrit, to help ypu the best, you please post your BSOD following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions Step by step. We need some more info for a better debugging; like MSINFO32 and Event Log.

Apparently it is visible that you are having a bugcheck 0x50. So I want to ask you a few questions.

    1. What is the antivirus do you use?
    2. How old the graphics card is? Can you remember the timing of getting the crashes and the graphics card are contemporary or not?
    3. Does it occur only when playing games, or some other times, too; say browsing internet or watching videos?
    4. How old the motherboard is?
    5. Have you upgraded your other device drivers like Network, sound etc?

► I think your assessment is right, it is not necessarily the ram, but memory; in your case most probably the graphics memory, or the graphics driver.

I would suggest you to reinstall your display driver first, but install the graphics driver only, not the Catalyst Control Center. CCC.exe is a very well known cause of crashes.

    1. Download and install |MG| Driver Fusion (Driver Sweeper) 1.1.1 Download.
    2. Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your ATI display driver.
    3. Boot normally now. Go to AMD Support & Drivers, search for the appropriate driver for your system, and install it.

Also, Stress test your video card: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark.

► Use onboard graphics and notice if the crashes happens or not.

In the mean time, if those crashes happen again, post it, complying with the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instruction.

Thank you for the reply Arc, I have attached the new .zip

    1. The antivirus I use is the free version of Avast.
    2. I got the graphics card about 2 years ago, this was when I build my PC.
    3. Yes it only occurs while playing games, but not always and sometimes takes a few hours.
    4. Same as the graphics card, about 2 years ago.
    5. I did update a few, but I will try to find out any others that I haven't updated.

I will let you know how it goes once I reinstall the graphics driver and update other drivers. Thanks again

Still the MSINFO32 file is missing there

In addition to my earlier post, do these too:

► A couple of your dumps shows NETIO.sys as the cause.
So I would suggest you to update your network driver.

1] download the network card driver from manufactuer's website.
    2] Then reinstall the driver:
3] Click the Start Button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Menu Search box and press Enter.
4] Double click to expand "Network adaptors".
5] Right click your network card and click Uninstall.
6] Check "Delete driver software for this device" check box, click OK.
    7] Restart the computer

If windows does not auto configure the appropriate drivers at startup, install the downloaded one manually.

► A couple of the dumps shows stop0x124. That is totally hardware related.
Follow all the steps thoroughly: Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

    Inform us :)

Sorry for the late reply, I have reinstalled my graphics driver using your method and also ran Furmark for a few hours and I didn't get any errors or blue screens. I have also updated my network driver. I have also played Battlefield 3 for a few hours today and have had no crashes so far, but I did do a prime95 blend test and an error occurred after about 7 mins.

I'm not sure if the driver update has fixed the crashes because prime95 came up with an error but had no crashes when playing BF3 and running Furmark. :S

I have attached the MSINFO32 file also the results file of the prime95 test, I also ran "sfc /scannow" and have attached the results of that too.

I just received another BSOD, this time it was 0x7E and atikmdag.sys, also this happened when I was NOT playing a game.

I have attached the mini dump.

    Amrit,

    • The MSINFO32 you supplied is corrupt.
    • Prime95 detected some errors in your CPU's operation.
    • SFC Ran successfully.
    • Lthe latest dump indicates atikmpag.sys despite of the update.

    This is the present situation.

Have you installed Catalyst control center during installation of GFX card driver? I should have told you to not install that one.

If possible, Let us know your event logs. It will be helpful. Otherwise, there is nothing that much to be worried at this point.

Hi, I have attached the MSINFO32 file again and my event logs. I think I did install Catalyst control center, it was included with the driver itself.

Amrit, you are using avast. Please Disable avast for a while, and then post your files, again, following all the steps in Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instruction.

It is a trouble here opening those files. I know that Avast sometimes disturbs SF Diag tool to work properly.
