Unexpected Shutdowns and Freezes when Idle

    Hello All,

I am experiencing some unexpected shutdowns and freezing when my Asus G73-JW laptop is idle. I think my shut-downs may have been caused by Windows power saving features. I disabled these features (sleep, hibernate, HDD shut-off, USB selective suspend), and had a freeze occur after the laptop was idle for three days. My screen saver was enabled (blank screen).

I have been monitoring my CPU and GPU temps using CPUID HWMonitor and they are withing a reasonable range (40-50 C idle, <75 C under load). I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic a few times (both regular and extended) with no errors.

My files from the SF Diagnostic Tool are in the attached ZIP. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Welcome

It looks like your USB drivers are causing the issue.

I suggest updating your USB drivers via Device Manager. The latest drivers may be installed, but perhaps they are corrupted. Uninstall them and reboot; the new ones should be automatically installed.

You may also go through the tutorial below:
USB Driver - General Fix for Problems

Later suggest you to turn on USB selective suspense, to see if it is caused by the driver or the hardware itself.
USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

If there any devices attached in the USB ports (other than keyboard and mouse), remove those and see if if the problem persists.

Thanks for the quick reply, koolkat. I uninstalled all USB drivers, installed new USB 3.0 and chipset drivers (both were out of date), followed the "USB Driver - General Fix" post, and turned on selective suspend.

Will leave my laptop on and let you know how it goes. If it's stable for a few days, I'll then start enabling power saving features and continue monitoring.

Enabled auto display turn-off yesterday morning after last post. Came back to a BSOD this evening (laptop automatically restarted and minidump was generated).

This was different than all the previous unexpected shutdowns. For those, laptop did not restart automatically and minidump was not generated.

Files are attached. Thanks for the help!

I saw the dump dated 10-09-12 and it shows the USB as the problem again..anyway

Lets enable driver verifier to rule out buggy drivers
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

    Information
Driver Verifier runs in the background, "testing" drivers for bugs. If it finds one, a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) will result; the corresponding dump file will hopefully show the faulty driver.

    Capt.Jack Sparrow said:
Driver Verifier monitors kernel-mode drivers and graphics drivers to detect illegal function calls or actions that might corrupt the system. It can subject the drivers to a variety of stresses and tests to find improper behavior.

Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.

Enabled Driver Verifier and got a BSOD immediately after rebooting and logging into Windows. Repeated this a second time. Both minidump files are in the attached ZIP, and let me know if you need anything else.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. I uninstalled the Saitek drivers and am now using Windows HID drivers. Enabled Driver Verifier again, restarted, and no BSOD yet. Will let you know how it goes.
