I'm not quite sure how to change AHCI mode or remove RAID.

When I go into disk management there is C: drive, System (199mb/165mg free) and HP Tools.

Can I partition the C: drive and load the Windows 7 from the new partition and then simply remove the partition after the load?

Your Disk mgmt doesn't show correct sizes. How do you know you have 2x750gb HD's? If they're not shown separately in Disk Mgmt then they must be in a RAID array amounting to close to 1500gb. This can be problematic during a reinstall and is best unRAIDed.

Have you considered running HP Factory Recovery from it's partition after making disks for backup? However with HP's crushing load of crapware and duplicate utilities it is an inferior install, although you can mitigate it some with Clean Up Factory Bloatware

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Management drive map and listings:

    1. Type Disk Management in Start Search box.
    2. Open Disk Mgmt. window and maximize it.
    3. Type Snipping Tool in Start Search box.
    4. Open Snipping Tool, choose Rectangular Snip, draw a box around full map and all listings.
5, Save Snip, attach using paper clip in Reply Box.

Tell us what is on each partition.

System: Not sure what is on this
HP Tools: I assume this is the HP bloatware
    Recovery (D)
Data (I:): second hard drive will be detached when I do the clean install.

flightmedic, when you start the computer you will see the HP boot screen. At the bottom of that screen it should tell you what key to push to get into bios. It has to be pushed while still on the HP boot screen. Once in bios you should see a catagory called sata configuration, storage configuration or sata mode. Click which ever one you have and tell us whether it says IDE, Raid or AHCI. Also look at the boot options screen and tell us how many hard drives you see there.

You don't have a RAID configuration since there is a second Data drive for the other 750gb HD.

HP tools is bootable diagnostics and should be left intact if you want to keep the factory partitions bootable. Same with Recovery. If you're still contemplating a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 then considerations about these partitions is discussed within, including Special Notes for HP Owners.

Are you inclined to run Factory Recovery or a Clean Reinstall? Either way I would make your Recovery disks first to have as a backup.

Download a new ISO and burn to DVD or write to stick using Step 1 and 2 in tutorial. Then boot, if HD is still not seen to choose partition, disable the data HD in BIOS setup to try install. If that fails you're probably going to need to wipe the HD which solves about half of these problems.

But read all of the tutorials again closely to know your various options, ask back any other questions you might have.

Would rather do a clean reinstall, to get rid of the HP bloatware.

I tried to create recovery disks but got the BSOD d/t iastor.sys so unable to create at this point.

I have the iso for windows 7 that was downloaded from the link on this site for a clean install. I also have the DVD/USB tool. Tried to burn to a DVD but again, BSOD. I'd really like to get to the usb method working or find another way to install.

Thanks in advanced for all the help to a nub like me.

Start over with the latest official ISO written to stick from Steps 1 and 2 in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Reset BIOS to defaults, set SATA controller to AHCI. YOu may need to disable the second HD in BIOS.

If it still fails, wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command.

How much free space do you have on your C partition?
Post the full Device Manager window, we might see something there that will help us.

Install this driver from Intel, then try to create recovery disks again and continue with Greg's advice.

    HP bloatware is crashing.
Remove the HP programs if the BSoDs continue before you can re-install Win7.
