Can you get a crash dump on computer lock-up?

My wife's laptop has developed a bad habit of randomly locking up to the point you have to hold the power button to shut the laptop off. I'm just wondering if it's possible to get Windows to write a crash dump off events like that, or is that at the point where it's just not going to happen even with the correct options selected?

The laptop is a HP G62 Notebook PC running Windows 7. More exact information can be provided if needed.

    Have you checked the msconfig?

Start > Search Programs and Files > Type (without quotes) "msconfig" > Startup tab

There may be lots of applications which are using the memory, and therefore causing the laptop to lock-up.

Please provide a screenshot of your System Configuration (msconfig) - Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

You may also want to clean up any corrupting bloatware which comes pre-installed with Windows 7: Clean Up Factory Bloatware

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at it tomorrow when I'm not half in the bag from cold meds.
