BSOD, Random, irregular but often..

I've been getting constant BSOD's on a new machine since building it about a month ago. Originally installed windows to a standard HDD, then copied all data to a new SSD. Thought that might have messed something up, so re-installed windows last week from scratch to the SSD. Still getting BSODs though.

Machine works fine (99%) of the time during the day when I'm working on it, I do 3d modelling and rendering, so often have all processors at 100% and using all of the 16gb of ram, without any issues.

It's overnight, at random times that it seems to crash, then not reboot successfully. The first version of windows eventually started spitting out "boot.mgr missing", when i restarted after an overnight BSOD. After which i formateed the SSD and re-installed.

If you need any more info at all, just post a reply and i'll try to figure it out.

forgive my stupidity, but i can't work out what to download from the Marvell site to update that Mvs91xx driver?

if i select win 7 64bit on the OS list, i get 3 options? Do i need the Yukon one, or one of the others?

What SSD do you have? It is not listed in your system specs. As far as I know, Marvell controllers on SSds are from Crucial and Plextor. If you have a crucial the firmware for the SSD can be found here. If you are trying to update the sata drivers for your motherboard, it will be on your motherboard's manufacturers site. Find your motherboard, click downloads and drivers. For questions like these it would be better to fill out your system specs completely. For an example of what we like, click system specs in the bottom left of this post and you will see mine.

Hi, you said you "copied" w7 from a HDD to an SSD, how exactly did you do that? The Marvell is a SATA controller on your motherboard and Yukon is probably for your LAN (network) connection, also on the board.
SSD firmware is different and would need to come from the SSD manufacturer's site.

Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built.

Log in to Seven Forums and you will be able to transfer the info directly to the specs page in your profile from within the System Info app.
After doing this your specs will be available in each of your posts. Click on My system Specs in the lower left of this post to see how it should look.

I've done the system spec thingy, see below.
The SSD is an OCZ agility 128gb,
The marvell is something i've installed from the MObo CD drivers. (looking at the CD now, the Marvell stuff is in /Drivers/RAID/Marvell/

I've downloaded the OCZ firmware update utility, but it's not finding my SSD as compatible with it??

Originally, i installed windows to a normal HDD, then used Acronis true image to move it to the SSD, but that kept bombing out too. The current install is a clean one.

did you install w7 to the SSD with all other drives disconnected? That is the preferred way.

Download the drivers from the Asus web site for your board. Firmware for the OCZ Agility 3 is here. It will not update to the System drive if using the toolbox. You can probably do it by downloading the linux based tool, and boot into that.

right, it hasn't crashed in a day or two.. which is an improvement.. thank you all for your suggestions..
but some of my software is just not happy.. in particular 3ds max 2012 will just not network render. It'll render locally OK, but give it a job from the network manager, and it bombs out with a cryptic error. I've removed, rebooted, reinstalled and rebooted. same issue.
I realise that this is a specific program issue, so not really relevant here..
I just think something weird has gone wrong with the windows installation to the SSD, it just doesn't seem to be 100% happy, and the 3dsmax issue is highlighting that.

Try running the System File checker, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html Use option 2. Click start, type cmd in the search box, right click the cmd entry and select run as administrator. It will verify and attempt to repair any system files.

I've run that, but it says it couldn't fix all files..
I'll have to try it from the boot command prompt thing..

could the fact my C: drive is available to eject all the time have anything to do with my problems? Maybe the SSD is plugged into wrong SATA port, so it thinks it's removable??

No, it shouldnt, matter that the drive is ejectable. Your SSD should be in port 0 or 1 on the Intel controller. Ports are listed in the manual usually and are usually marked on the motherboard. Go to device manager and look under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. At the bottom see what controller with AHCI in the name is. MSAHCI is Microsoft's AHCI controller.

Also, with the scannow command, if errors are found, run it and if errors can't be fixed, reboot and run it again. You may need to run it 3 times with reboots between each to fix the errors if they can be fixed.

I'd be inclined to see if CheckSUR can fix this, and whether it shows any further problems...

Please run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your public SkyDrive so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
