I back up all my work files at the end of every trimester so i only need to retake some files. I have the sintallation DVD + valid license. No i do not know how to back up instances of windows 7 and would love to learn how if you have the time. My laptop has a feature that automatically restores it to the factory state purging everything that is what i will use.
I hope restore to factory state still works! Please test it now... of course don't start the actual restore!

I assume you have an external disk with a lot of free space. Backup is just "put 1 or more partition" to a single file. I have a program that can that. Of course you can also restore from it. But a nice extra feature is: You can mount that single file as a virutal disk! So you can see the files and drag and drop to new win7.

    Imaging with free Macrium

       Note

The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

Here is the link to my Skydrive site.

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

So download that file and do the backup

I do have one question regarding partitions. Say for example something like this were to happen again and the OS was corrupted in some way. If i had the OS on its own partition ( a: ) and my programs and files on an other ( b: ) could i re install windows over a: with out wiping b:?

If it got to this stage again i would simply re-install this is simply an example
you can disable smileys . "additional options" below where you type.
You're right with partitions. Use partition for OS and one for DATA.
Best thing to do is. Move your my documents, my music etc to the other partition as fast as possible after installation (don't install applications yet). Just right click on it, properties, location. Very straight forward.

you can shrink your C partition in disk management. and create new partitions there. But don't make more then 4 partitions in total!!! More is not possible and win7 converts to a dynamic disk... that's not what you want. It is possible to create more, but then they should be LOGICAL partitions

Info about mounting the macrium backup image How to browse an Image or 'File and Folder' Backup in Windows Explorer
