I do have an external and I have been, occassionally, saving data.
My emails that i need to save are in Netscape 7.2. Ancient, I know. It was a total bear trying to install that on Windows 7, and i dont know that I could do it again. All I got was errors and somehow at some point it got installed and worked, despite the errors. But it took a lot of time and luck, which may not happen again. So I want to preserve this hard drive just the way it is.

I did not tell Dell that i reinstalled Windows since I have not, and I am sure they would be able to determine I did not by the dates.

I can try contacting Dell again, point out what you have told me. I need to find about 3 hours in a day that i can devote to them. They start from the beginning and it is kind of mind numbing. Esp when the last words are install Windows, we will help you. (one of them offered to help me for a few hundred dollars!!! )

I would hope they could give me individual components. But will they? They have that mantra, ... reinstall Windows, Reinstall Windows. I will try, maybe i can grab 3 hours in the morning to devote to them.

Thank you so much!! You have no idea how this forum and your help alleviates my frustration.

Should I create a new thread for my firewall problem?

    Code:
    BugCheck 124, {4, fffffa8007af8038, 0, 0}

    Probably caused by : GenuineIntel
    Code:
    FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: X64_0x124_GenuineIntel_PCIEXPRESS
The crash was again caused by the network card, or the PCIe slot being used by the network card.

I will ask someone to help you with the Windows Firewall :)

I suspect that the firswall is going to be a minor probem - operating without an effective AV for 6 months is likely to mean that the system is highly infected.

Having said that, I had a quick look through the thread, and it seems that you have a fair number of problems, amongst which is the inability of the MCPR to run properly.
I suspect that this is partly due to folders being marked as hidden or read-only - a common malware trick.

Please run teh following commands individually, and just quote the number of file and directories found in teh summary at the end of each.

    DIR C:\Windows /AR
    DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AR /S
    DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AH /S

The run teh following commands and post the results

    NET START WSCSVC
    NET START MPSDRV
    NET START MPSSVC

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Alongwith what Noel suggested ..... Scan the system for possible virus infection.

OK - that gives us a starting point or two, at least.
You have a very high number of hidden folders present - I would suggest trying the following .....

Open an Elevated Command Prompt and run the following commands

    Attrib -H C:\Windows\System32\*. /S
    DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AH /S

How many files and folders show now?
If the number is still the same, then we'll have to try it a different way -
please run teh following command, which will create a new files DIRH.log on the desktop - attach the file to your response.

    DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AH /S >%userprofile%\desktop\DIRH.log
