Or try Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic
But I think the tool not running is just one of your problems!? sfc gives errors as well. And windows explorer crashes sometimes. No virus?? Do you have a good virusscanner?

You have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit ..what language? You have a valid windows licence? Have a look at a sticker on laptop.. Certificate Of Authority (COA) sticker is it.
Yes, win 7 HP 64 bit , in English (UK). Yes, its valid, it came pre-loaded on the laptop.

Im using avast - downloaded it about a week ago. Was using AVG. I have used the scanner but found nothing - will check again.
It came preloaded...hmmm. But do you have a valid product key??? Find the COA sticker

I bought the laptop from a reputable store - less than 1 yr old and still under guarantee.

    Is my anti-virus scanner OK?

So, from the link above can I download a copy and use my product key (presuming its valid?

f8 "repair your computer"->memory diagnotics tool... asks you to reboot and on the fly modifies the bootmenu. It runs the same program as within windows!! So both fail

Yes create a system repair disc. And boot from it. You know how to change the boot order in BIOS? Be sure it only boots from DVD!! So temporary disable boot from harddisk! I must be sure it runs memory diagnostics from cd/dvd
Yes- both fail, really concerned by that I must admit.

I will create the disc - cant remember how to change bios settings to boot from disc. I will check the net for instructions.

Should I be concerned by the results so far?
file \boot\memtest.exe is corrupt (I don't think it's calling something else). Very strange

    Disk is fine

sfc gives errors but says all has been repaired. Very strange

    Don't know the reason yet

    First prove memory is fine

Yes that's the win7 installation DVD. You can burn it in win7 by right click->open with->windows burning (or somehting like that)

To check if anti-virus is still working: Download ° EICAR - European Expert Group for IT-Security

    [QUOTE=Kaktussoft;2186632]Or try Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic

Is there any point in using this 3rd party test?
