Windows 7: Complete lockup (no BSOD), icon corruption, folder settings forgotten

Thank You - Lots or warnings in the instructions I see!

I think I need to do this one with a clear head rather than when I get back from work, so I'll put that back to the weekend. Fortunately I have a proper disk as I boiught one to install myself.

I had another lockup this morning, so its definitely not fixed yet.Its still forgetting folder settings, and messing up icon overlays, though that last one seems to come and go. Here's hoping the repair install does the trick!

For the MsMpEng.exe, I was more interested in the CPU it was using than the memory...

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated.
Nick

A further short bereak for job interviews, now I am back on the case.

I started to follow the repair install instructions. My home premium box didn't mention SP1 so I assume it wasn't an SP1 version, and went to download the disk image for home premium as directed.

I followed the instructions, and after about 10 minutes checking, it informed me that:

Quote:
Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.
Not sure how to tackle this as it seems the freshly downloaded one should be more up to date than the disk I have...

Any suggestions for getting an up to date image to use in the upgrade install?

Thanks,
Nick

Try it a few more times as it may correct itself. An SP1 installer should work with Win7 SP1.

If not consider getting a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail.

If you stick with the tools and methods given you'll get and keep a perfect install.

Thanks fpr the suggestion. I really want to avoid a clean install as I have LOADS of programs installed.

Just in case I am missing something obvious, how do I tell if my W7 home premium, (I still have the box etc) incluides SP1?

Thanks,
Nick

It should say at the top on Control Panel>System.

If you don't have SP1 then you don't really have Win7 since SP1 is like a car engine overhaul = it becomes the car engine itself. There are so many performance updates that you may be suffering from lack of one or more.

The control panel shows SP1. What I meant though was the DISK, where it does not seem to say anything.

I figured that by getting the download, I'd be getting something up-to-date, (abd it did spend some time checking for updates when installing it checked for updates).

As said, maybe just try it again and hope it does something different?

The latest official downloads at Windows 7 official ISO downloads all have SP1.

It depends upon when you bought Win7 if it's disk contains SP1. See if it has the same code as you download from link above somewhere on the box. If not try it anyway.

I just tried running the uprade install 4 times in a row, and it still insists:

"Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade. "

It's definitely connected to the internet - judging by it downling the same anmount of data every time...

If its downloading the latest info I really don't understand why its not the newest possible...

Any ideas on what I else can try to make it do an upgrade install?

Where did you get this idea that the installer is downloading SP1 from the web during the Repair Install?

The minor installation updates being loaded from internet have nothing to do with having the latest official installer, which must be downloaded manually from the web from the link provided, burned to DVD or written to bootable flash stick using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool.

Well, when it told it was updating, I assumed it was (sensibly) ensuring I had an up to date install!

Seemed reasonable to me...
