BSOD while opening folders in Windows Explorer, error 0x00000050

We have a Windows 7 virtual machine running in VMWare (under Windows 8). The virtual machine has 2 processors and 4GB RAM. All the VM files are located on an external SSD connected via USB.

While browsing files in Windows Explorer (specifically trying to locate a file by drilling down a tree) the machine bluescreened with the "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA".

It would not reboot (stayed on the windows startup screen for 20 minutes before we gave up), and it would not System Repair (Tried for over 15 minutes and then failed), but it was able to System Restore to this morning after Windows Updates.

This issue has occurred twice before; once was with a different physical machine.

Tonight we're planning to use Verifier to see if any of the drivers have problems.

    Welcome aboard.

The crash dump you supplied is very silent about anything.

BTW, you may need to follow the guide: Troubleshooting Explorer.exe Crashing Issues.

And, answer one question please ... is it happening everywhere, or for any particular folder/folders only? If the second one is true, what do those folders contain?
