Houston, we have a situation:

Either the graphic card is got problems or it could either be the PSU not providing adequate power to the card as mentioned by Britton30..

The only way to test now is either with a different power supply or with different graphics card... Try borrowing either one of them from your friends and test..

I'm hoping it's the PSU and not the card! I will have to buy one from ebuyer can you reccomend one that doesn't cost the earth as christmas has broke the bank! It's running fairly fast right now but I guess that would be because it's got enough power to move it's ass, but if I try a game or something it'll probably crash won't it!

Well like i said Test before you buy anything ...

Just borrow a PSU from a friend roughly the same 800Watts or more and if your system works fine with this supply and the graphics cards.. you are good to go with a new PSU buy.

Otherwise you would need to replace Graphics card.

OK I will do that then! I do have another Graphics Card but it's only a radeon 4350 it doesn't even need it's own power supply! should I try that or is that pointless? Shall I mark this thread as solved and give you guy's +rep now?

Well wait..

The whole point of doing the PSU test is to see if the PSU can supply enough power to your exisiting card..

You can try the radeon 4350... after the PSU test...

I will wait for the PSU test before you mark this post as solved... and then please rep those helped.

The XFX PSU seems to meet the specs Dakka. I have had no experience with the brand. Certainly would/should be better than your current one. The XFX does have up to 53A on the 12V.

Thank you! I've just ordered it so here's hoping! It was £70 and had good reviews so hopefully I won't have to buy a new gpu but if I do there must be a better one than the 5870 now! It was the best when I bought it but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that! If I do I do but on a side note, you guys have been great! Thank you

OK so I just recieved the new PSU and as soon as I turned the pc on I got a BSOD. For some reason the minidump is not there but here is what WhoCrashed says...
On Thu 10/01/2013 17:32:37 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: Unknown (0xFFFFF80003EDF468)
Bugcheck code: 0xA (0xA4, 0x2, 0x1, 0xFFFFF80003EDF468)
Error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Bug check description: This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error.
Google query: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

This is driving me crazy.

Please follow this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174459-dump-files-configure-windows-create-bsod.html set it to create small memory dump files.

Whocrashed is not reliable or accurate. I suspect you don't have a C:/Windows/Memory.dmp if you do, copy them, zip them up and post them here. Unless they are missing or corrupted, Windows system files will never cause a BSOD. I am sure you already have but run sfc /scannow again http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Uninstall your GPU driver and put your 4350 or borrow another card from a friend. See if that helps. Also, do you have an extra hard drive or can you get one?

Thank you essenbe for your help! I do have windows set to collect the mini dump files but it crashed and froze before it finished gathering it so I was unable to get that one. I will however run the scan again now and then put in the other gpu. I have another hdd in another pc with windows on it, that will work won't it?

This is the last dump I got. The crashes after that didn't make it to gathering the dump info, it froze at about 40%

It hasn't crashed or frozen at all yet today! I've played games while playing music and downloading and browser open all at the same time! I find this unusual as it normally would have crashed/froze/BSOD'd by now! Not that I'm complaining about that obviously, and I know there is still time yet! I ran scannow earlier and it verified ok and I also ran video mem test which also passed! I shall leave it running and wait until/if it BSOD's!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I ran upgrade advisor to see if it came up with anything that wasn't compatible and it said AMD Dual core Optimizer was not compatible so I uninstalled it, however I have never used it, I just removed it anyway! Also, should I be changing any bios settings for my 5870? If I should, I haven't!

You may have found the answer to your problem. That's the good news, but as you know, that means a new graphics card unless you can RMA that one. The only thing you may need to do is change CCC drivers. I don't think you need to do anything in BIOS. Just give it a little more time until you are sure it is stable.

I will do and I will report back shortly! Just so I'm not confusing you though, it still has the hd 5870 in there! I turned it on this morning to run the sfc /scannow command again and it has not been any trouble at all! I had just opened the wrapper on the gpu you told me to try and I thought 'wait a second, how come it hasn't crashed yet' so I've left it going and so far so good! I changed the ram from dual to single too, I don't think that's got anything to do with it though as I've tried that before with both sets of ram! What do you think? Memtest only shows it as 400 instead of 1600 but cpuid and speccy both show 1600

If it's not crashing, something changed. I thought you had changed cards. Maybe a bad dimm slot. I would trust CPUz more than anything else. I know you ran memtest, but it is not infallible, but it's the best test we have. See how it goes. If it does not crash, I wouldn't worry about the single/dual channel unless you want a new board and CPU. But, it makes me wonder why it didn't crash when you ran on board graphics.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it's just having a good day for once? It seems to be real fast today for some strange reason. Maybe it is a bad Dimm but none of them have failed on memtest so IDK. I will just see if it stays stable like this for a while and if not I will put this other GPU in and see where we go from there. As for an RMA on this 5870, it's too late I think I have had it over a year I will have to get a new card if that is indeed the problem. I will keep you guy's posted either way though
