Solved BSOD whilst starting downloads on Steam

Hey there SevenForums,

I've been searching over the net for a while looking for the answer to the whole 'DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' crash for some time now. My system is stable (for the most part) and I only see this happen when I begin a download for any game on Steam.

I've used the BlueScreenViewer to peer into the .dmp file and see what had caused said crash.

This is what I got.

((If you pay close attention, you can see that I have spent some time poking at this computer...))

I've tried reinstalling the offending application, but it didn't seem to have an effect on anything.

The zip file containing all the goodies of the crash details are attached to the thread in case they are needed. I also apologies in advance for my ignorance in some areas. I may not be paying careful attention to the minor details in my work as I eat my cereal on my desk. If any addition information is needed for assistance, I will be happy to go and retrieve it.

(Which should be proof enough. Who would willingly eat a bowl of cereal with liquids in it over their brand new computer? A sleep deprived individual, that's who. I will stop ranting now.)

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Alcohol 120% at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :

  • Double click to open it.
  • Click this button only:
  • 2012-12-13_224441.jpg
  • If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept the restart.
What antivirus program do you use?

Thanks for the reply Arc,

At the current moment, I have no anti-virus software. Though these little changes seem to have fixed my problems completely. Thank you again for that.

Marking this as -=Solved=-.

Nice to know. :) But you need to use an antivirus.

Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Download and install those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.
