Freeze on shutdown for 5 minutes, then BSD

Hello everyone,

I'm new to SevenForums, so I hope I've managed to follow all the steps necessary to get some help to resolve this annoying problem that has started happening in the past week or so.

Every time I shutdown my desktop, the screen freezes for around 4 to 5 minutes showing "Shutting Down" with the small blue animated circle spinning. Eventually, it BSD's saying "driver power state failure" and reboots.

Windows will then boot up fine, although give the usual "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message. I always allow this dialogue to connect to Microsoft for a solution, but it seems there is none.

For info, if I boot into Safe Mode, I can shutdown/reboot with no problem. I have tried various things today, such as disabling all startup items in MSConfig, but no joy after a reboot, it still hung. I've also updated my motherboard to the latest BIOS.

I will attach the zip file I have made from SFD to this post, any help from the experts out there would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Andy.

Total Physical Memory	3.47 GB
Available Physical Memory	1.34 GB
Total Virtual Memory	13.9 GB
Available Virtual Memory	11.3 GB

You have 8 GB of RAM installed and you're using the 32bit version of windows? Any particular reason for doing so?
To allocate and use all 8 GB RAM, you need to use the 64bit version of windows.

To install the 64bit ISO (Professional version SP1 in your case) from the Dell link inside this tutorial:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
Coming to what caused your BSOD:
Aventail(R) Connect(TM) with Smart Tunneling(TM)

Do not install this software in the fresh install of windows.
See if the BSOD-s occur again when you shut down your computer.

Windows 7 Professional 32 bit

Hello KoolKat77, thanks fot your quick reply.

My machine has been through a few changes in recent months. I upgraded the motherboard, CPU, power supply and memory 6 months ago, and all has been fine up to now. It also used to have Windows XP Pro 32 as the OS, and as I work for a university, I was able to purchase the Windows 7 Pro Upgrade for 30 - so I suspect that If I downloaded the Dell Factory OEM Windows 7 64 bit you mention, my Upgrade product key would not allow that to activate.

I have been toying with buying a proper OEM copy of Windows 7 64 bit, as I know I am not getting the benefit of the full amount of RAM (it was cheap at the time, I thought "what the heck, get 8Gb, and maybe upgrade to 64 at some point" - I just have not got round to it yet...and the thought of reinstalling all my software is probably putting me off a bit!

Thanks for identifying Aventail, oddly enough I have used this fine for quite a while, its what allows me to connect to my university VPN. I'l ltry uninstalling that, and let you know if it has got rid of the shutdown hang/BSD.

All the best,

Andy.

Just a thought here but if safe mode works ok then often a Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup will work as well

On a side note i have suffered similar problems recently on one of my machines and it was caused by windows update installing usb drivers and updates for my MS wireless keyboard and mouse its probably totally unrelated just thought id mention it as its quite coincidental, Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard is what did it for me and you have it installed
edit - TRY THIS FIRST I GOT A FEELING

Also you have a driver named sptd.sys installed this is part of daemon tools and is known to cause problems i would try removing any software like this you have even if its temp for troubleshooting

To reinstall you may indeed use the latest installer with SP1 given in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail and will help you obtain and maintain a perfect install if you stick with them closely.

Under the retail Win7 EULA you're entitled to use either 32- or 64-bit version for each license and can change either as often as you want, including to another PC. With Upgrade version you must additionally have a qualifying XP or Vista OS on hand which is not used during the qualifying period, although it never needs to be installed itself.

It's the key which determines whether it will activate, so with Upgrade version when you boot the installer it will see an OS and allow use of Upgrade Product Key during install even if you delete all partitions to create new during the reinstall.

Only if you wipe the HD first so that when booted the installer sees no other OS will it reject the Upgrade key requiring you install without key, then afterwards do the quick registry workaround given in Option 3 of Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version.

Hi KoolKat77, just to update you, removing Aventail did indeed sort my shutdown/BSD problem - thank you so much for your help!

Pauly, I also use a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, and recall the drivers being updated for that a month or two ago, however everthing seems to be working fine again after removing Aventail from my system, so I'm not sure I suffered the same problem as you. I'll take on board your comment re Daemon Tools, and uninstall that for the time being as well (I hardly ever use it tbh).

GregRocker, thanks for the heads up re how to use my existing Windows 7 upgrade disc/key, to legally upgrade to Win7 64. I have several partitions, but I would only want to wipe C: (my system partition), then follow the guides you linked to, and leave my D:, E: , and F: partitions as they are (they contain music, photos, etc - is this possible, as the guides seem to infer that al partitions need to be wiped during install?

Thanks so much for the helpful replies to my first ever thread on SevenForums - what a great community this is

All the best,

Andy.

Thats absolutely possible leave all partitions intact and just wipe C and reinstall
If you plan to do it and have any specific questions post back

You should always have your data backed up to another HD, external, DVD, another PC on your network or to the cloud (7gb free storage in Skydrive with each Windows Live/Hotmail ID) since the HD can fail at any time. That said, if you don't touch your data partitions then the data should survive a reinstall.

If you have a 100mb System Reserved partition which boots Win7 (it will be marked System Active in Disk Mgmt now) then delete both it and C during install and create a new partition in the space so that the installer correctly configures a new System Reserved or else the old one will be cut out and useless.

Best to post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Mgmt drive map with listings so we can look it over for you for any potential probs. Use the Snipping Tool in Start Menu.
