I agree with Layback Bear completely .... but if the OP by any chance has a RAID setting, uninstalling marvell may hamper something ... so asked for updating it.

If there is no raid settings, better to not use the SATA\RAID controllers. Whereas Marvell is the worst.

Jeepmash, you may try deleting the PLTGC.sys file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers and\or C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers; if you are sure that you dont use CMedia. Also, uninstall Marvell from Control Panel> Programs and Features.

Thanks Anak. I believe I am using the ports that I have always used in my system for the SATA drives (I originally had three drives, one PATA with the OS, and two SATA but I moved all the data on one of the SATA drives to the other and cloned the PATA drive to the then empty SATA). I can try moving to another SATA port on my motherboard though. Is there any way to know which drive was being accessed that caused the failure so I know which to move?

So, will the Marvell chipset still require any drivers? Those SATA connections are the internal ports I use to connect my hard drives, will uninstalling the controllers cause any issues? I don't have any RAID settings on

No, they will not cause any issue. After uninstalling, it will reboot, and the default\gemeric drivers will be automatically installed on reboot. As the computer was working during installation, before you have installed those sata controllers.

It gives a hint that the system is old, the windows installation too. The best will be if you do a fresh install on a SATS hdd, and use the PATA one as storage only.

I will try this and see what the results are. In the future, when I do another build, what chipsets (like Marvell) should I avoid in motherboards so that I don't have these kinds of issues?

Marvell is a must to avoid ... they are poorly coded. Intel chipset you may use anytime.

Your welcome. That is a good question.

Just off the top of my head, you could try checking Performance Monitor to see if there are any error/warning messages.

Start menu >Administrative Tools >Performance Monitor >Then double click reports, then system, then system diagnostics >then the report.

It can also be found by going to:
Start menu >Run >Type in perfmon >click OK >Then double click reports, then system, then system diagnostics >then the report.

Check to see if there are any red "failed" reports in Diagnostic Reports Warnings.
You can also scroll down to check detailed Basic System Reports, and CPU.
If they are not open, click on the down arrow to the far right.
