BSOD driver power state / Nvidia graphics driver problems

    Hello,

After many many hours of searching forums for solutions I have been unable to find a solution to my problem - so I decided to open a topic of my own and hope someone can help me with my problem specifically.

My problem is similar to this topic, although the solutions posted there aren't working for me. In short: I have been experiencing random but frequent BSODs (16 and counting) with the message 'driver power state overload' being displayed.

In my quest for a solution I wanted to upgrade my drivers, when I noticed my Nvidia Geforce 650M graphics card seems to have disappeared. When I try to install the latest driver from Nvidia's website I get the error 'graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware'. Attempting to open the Nvidia control panel gives me the message 'An Nvidia graphics card was not detected on your system' and I cannot find the card listed in the device manager (only the intel HD graphics family is listed under display adapters)... To be clear: I'm quite sure my laptop SHOULD have this card, it's just not detecting it for some reason.

Since the symptoms of my problem are exactly the same as described in the topic linked above, I have tried to follow the solution described by Arc. Installed Driver Fusion, started in in safe mode and tried to delete Nvidia drivers - but nothing seemed to be listed here. I still clicked delete but not sure if this actually did something or not.

    Hello Zephos.

As per the supplied data, this is the specification of your graphics.
    Code:
    Name Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
    PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0166&SUBSYS_21031043&REV_09\3&11583659&2&10
Adapter Type Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, Intel Corporation compatible
Adapter Description Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
    Adapter RAM (2.080.374.784) bytes
    Installed Drivers igdumd64.dll,igd10umd64.dll,igd10umd64.dll,igdumd32,igd10umd32,igd10umd32
    Driver Version 9.17.10.2932
So, it says it is not nVidia. But as you are saying that it was Nvidia Geforce 650M, and it disappeared, the best option is to contract the vendor. I wish you are within warranty?

Thank you for your quick reply Arc.

Actually, I'm not sure what it was before - I never really checked. All I know for certain is that the laptop should contain a 650M video card and that I cannot find it anywhere in the device manager window. So I figured this may have something to do with it. If the logs say the problem is the Intel graphics processor, what steps would I have to take to solve it?

As for warranty, I am within the time period, but due to practical reasons it will be difficult to send it in if I have to. Are you sure I need to send it in for repair?

The performance increase is just as significant for the integrated HD4000 GPU. In comparison to the old HD3000, the new GPU supports DirectX 11 and shows a performance increase of 80% in 3DMark. The older, but popular Nvidia GeForce GT540 GPU is only ahead by 16% now.
Whenever performance of the integrated GPU is insufficient, the dedicated GeForce GT650M gets activated by Nvidia's Optimus technology. Notebook manufacturers are able to choose the core clock speed above the normal 735 MHz, provided the cooling system can handle the extra heat. Asus chose to increase the clock speed by 100 MHz and runs the GPU at 835 MHz for improved performance.

So, as some part of a new hardware is not being detected, it is the best way to utilize the warranty, IMO :)

I am currently in Japan and will be for the next 6 months. Utilizing the warranty would require me to send the laptop back to the Netherlands where I bought it and ask a friend to send it in. That would take a considerable amount of time (on top of the already long warranty process) and since I cannot miss my laptop this long I would practically need to get it fixed here in Japan or find a replacement laptop for the time being.

Both options will cost me a lot of money so forgive me for pressing on the matter as I very much appreciate your help, but I hope you understand I want to be absolutely sure there is no other option before I do one of these things.

Is there any way to figure out why my laptop is not detecting the video card? And is this related to the BSOD's or could they be caused by another problem?

You may need to open the laptop, to make it sure that the card is properly placed, or it is working ok. But, most possibly it will nullify the warranty.

Anyway, I am asking for more suggestion.

Before any more suggestions come, you uninstall the nvidia display driver.

    • Download and install Driver Fusion.
    • Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your nVidia display driver.
    • Boot normally now.

And then update the Intel HD Graphics Driver, either from our forum link, Latest Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows 7, or You may get it from Intel Download Center.
Moreover, you may run the Intel (R) Driver Update Utility to auto detect the appropriate driver for your computer.

I think it will work as a temporary solution.

I ran driver fusion in safe mode to delete the Nvidia drivers, is there a way to confirm if this worked?

I already used the driver update utility before opening a topic here - this now says my version is 9.17.10.2932, which it says is the current version. So this should be Ok.

Will let you know if the BSODs are gone and if you have any further suggestions please let me know. If I can't use the warranty there is no harm in (risking) voiding it I suppose.

OK, let us know the situation after doing those changes. Specially if it crashes again, upload the crash dump.

Unfortunately, I had 2 more crashes. The first created a minidump which is attached. When I rebooted it took only about 5 minutes for the next crash, but for some reason I cannot find a minidump of this one.
